Searching for Answers
The clinic was small, suffocatingly quiet, filled with the scent of antiseptic and the soft whir of machines. I clenched my fists, desperate for answers as I approached the young man. “What do you mean she’s in danger?” My voice trembled, a raw thread of urgency lacing my words.
He looked pale, his brow slick with worry. “Liora… she’s not safe. They’re coming for her.”
<p“But who?” I pressed, my heart hammering. “Who’s coming for her? You have to tell me!”
He backed away slightly, his eyes darting toward the door. “I can’t—,” he started, but his phone buzzed violently in his pocket. He fished it out, glancing at the screen. His expression shifted from panic to outright fear.
“They’re coming for her!” he whispered, eyes widening as he turned toward the exit.
I reached for him, but he was already sprinting out the door. “Wait!” I called, but he vanished, leaving me in a whirlwind of confusion and dread.
My mind raced. I had to find Liora. Had to find a way to protect her. The weight of the world pressed down on my shoulders as I turned to the reception desk where the nurse stared at me, wide-eyed.
<p“Do you know who he is?” I asked, desperate for any clue that could help me understand this nightmare.
She shook her head slowly, and my gut twisted with a sense of impending disaster. I had to move. I had to find Liora before it was too late.
A Family Unraveled
Returning to the bookshop felt surreal, as if I were navigating a dream. The disarray of my life was now a jigsaw puzzle that had just revealed a missing piece. It wasn’t just Liora who needed saving; I could feel the tendrils of a truth tightening around my throat.
“What the hell just happened?” I muttered under my breath, paced back and forth, the tattoo etched in my mind. A thought emerged, gnawing at me—could he really be her brother?
I grabbed a notebook and began writing everything down. His name was… what was it? I stumbled over my thoughts, but then, almost instinctively, I moved toward the door. I had to find him. I had to connect the dots before darkness swallowed Liora whole.
Just outside, I scanned the bustling streets, my heart racing, when I spotted him. There he was, standing on the sidewalk, a haunted look in his eyes. “Wait!” I shouted, running toward him. He turned, surprise mingling with confusion.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he said, his voice strained.
<p“But Liora!” I exclaimed, urgency bubbling over. “Tell me the truth about her. Please!”
He hesitated, glancing over his shoulder. “You don’t understand. Liora was taken. We both were.”
My heart sank. “Taken? What do you mean?”
“She was kidnapped during that holiday. They wanted her, and they got to us first. We were part of a network. A lot of kids… like us.” His eyes held a glimmer of shared pain.
“You’re her brother, aren’t you?” I whispered, suddenly overwhelmed with the weight of his admission.
His expression darkened. “Liora is in hiding. I thought she was safe, but they’re still looking for her. They’ll come again, and she won’t be the only one they take.”
Every word he spoke was a dagger to my heart. “What are you saying?” I gasped, struggling to absorb the implications. “You mean she was raised under a new identity?”
“Yes,” he said, running a hand through his hair. “To protect her from the people who took us. But they never stopped watching.”
My knees nearly buckled. “All this time…” I murmured, the realization crashing over me like a wave. “She was… she was always in danger.”
He stepped closer, his voice low. “We might still be too late. If they know she’s here, they’ll come for her.”
Suddenly, a vehicle pulled to a stop nearby, and a heavyset man stepped out, scanning the area. My heart raced. “We have to go!” I yelled, grabbing his arm. “We need to save her!”
But as I turned back toward the alley where I left Liora, dread gripped my heart. The hunt for my daughter—and for the truth—had just begun. Time was running out.
