Clara’s Revelation
“I can’t believe it’s you,” Clara said, her voice trembling. “I’ve held onto this dress for so long. I just knew it had to be returned.”
As she spoke, I felt my stomach twist in a mixture of confusion and disbelief. “But… how did you get it?”
Clara took a deep breath, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “After the accident, I didn’t know what to do. I felt so lost without her.” She glanced at the dress, cradling it like a fragile relic. “I found it in a box at the thrift store, tucked under some winter coats. I thought it was a sign. I had to keep it close.”
<p“I was a friend of Teresa’s during her senior year. We drifted apart, but when I heard about what happened…” Her voice cracked, making my heart ache. “She was everything to me — bright, full of dreams.”
My throat felt tight. “What kind of dreams?”
Clara’s brow furrowed, as if pulling memories from deep inside. “She wanted to study art. Travel to Europe. She always talked about Paris.” Clara smiled wistfully, but that smile faded. “Then it all just… disappeared.”
She paused, the weight of her recollections hanging heavy in the air. “I never had the courage to reach out after. I thought I would intrude on your grief.”
The thought that someone else carried a piece of Teresa with them struck me deeply. “You’ve kept the dress all these years?”
With a nod, Clara continued, “It felt like a part of her was still here with me. I thought one day I’d bring it back to you when I was ready. But I never felt ready.”
“It’s been a long time,” I whispered. “I never imagined I’d see her dress again. It’s like…” I trailed off, emotions choking me. “It’s like reopening a wound.”
“I know,” Clara said softly, her voice now a whisper. “But I had to come. It felt like the right thing to do.”
Memories Over Tea
We sat down at my dusty kitchen table, the dress draped carefully over a chair. The air smelled like chamomile as I poured the steaming water. Clara’s eyes sparkled with a distant light as she took a sip.
“Remember the spring dance at school?” she asked, her smile returning. “Teresa was so excited to go. She couldn’t decide who to ask as her date.”
I nodded, a bittersweet ache filling my heart. “She told me about her options. So many boys liked her. I just wanted to protect her from getting hurt.”
“She was fierce, though,” Clara said, her expression softening. “Nothing scared her. She wanted to explore the world.”
Clara pulled out her phone and searched through her gallery, finally landing on a photo. “Look,” she said, turning the screen toward me. “Here we are, all of us together.”
The image captured a group of bright-eyed teenagers, laughter frozen in time. Teresa stood in the center, radiant in her energy. But my gaze drifted to the background, where a familiar face caught my attention.
“Who’s that?” I asked, pointing at the boy lurking in the shadows of the picture. He wasn’t mentioned in any news articles. My heart raced with something I couldn’t yet name.
Clara’s smile faltered. “That’s Mark. He was supposed to join us that day.”
“Mark?” I repeated, my mind racing. “I never heard anything about him.”
She shifted uncomfortably, a flicker of apprehension in her eyes. “It’s complicated. He was… well, he was supposed to meet Teresa before they left. They had a secret plan.”
“A secret plan?” My pulse quickened. “What kind of plan?”
Before Clara could answer, her face paled. She clutched her stomach, eyes widening in alarm. “I—” she gasped, collapsing onto the floor with a thud.
Panic surged through me as I rushed to her side, gripping her shoulders. “Clara! Stay with me!” I felt the weight of the moment pressing down as she blinked slowly, her lips whispering something incomprehensible before her eyes rolled back in her head.
“Clara!” I screamed, a sense of foreboding gripping me. The truth about that day loomed over us like a storm, waiting to unleash its fury.
