Determined to Find Liora
My heart thundered in my chest as I rushed out of the bookshop, the young man’s words echoing in my mind. “They’re coming for her.” I had no time to waste. I had to find him, to demand answers, to learn everything I could about my daughter.
The streets of Porto Selene blurred as I sprinted after him, weaving through the throngs of tourists and locals alike. My breaths came in ragged gasps, each one anchored by an urgency that threatened to swallow me whole.
Finally, the veterinary clinic came into view, a small building tucked between a bakery and a souvenir shop. As I burst through the door, the scent of antiseptic and animal fur hit me. I scanned the room. There he was, standing behind the reception desk, anxious and pale.
“You!” I shouted, my voice cracking with desperation. “What do you mean, she’s in danger?”
He looked up, his eyes widening as if he’d seen a ghost. “You shouldn’t be here,” he said, glancing towards the back of the clinic.
I stepped closer, feeling the weight of my question pressing down on me. “What the hell is happening? What danger is Liora in?”
He hesitated, a flicker of fear crossing his face. “It’s… complicated. She was raised to hide from a group that—”
His phone buzzed violently on the counter, cutting him off. He answered, the color draining from his face as he listened. The words splintered in my ears, “No, not now… They can’t. They’re coming for her!”
He hung up abruptly, panic coursing through him. “I have to go,” he said, his voice a strained whisper as he stepped away.
“Wait!” I shouted, reaching out for him, but he was already scrambling for the door. “What do you know about her?” But he was gone, leaving me with nothing but fear and uncertainty.
Finally Meeting Liora
I stood there, breathless, my mind racing. I had to find Liora. I had come this far; there was no turning back. The clinic buzzed with the low sounds of animals in need, but all I could hear was the pounding of my own heart.
“Excuse me,” I called to a nurse behind the counter. “Where is Liora? I need to see her.” My voice was a threadbare whisper, trembling with urgency.
She looked at me curiously, then nodded toward a hallway. “She’s in the back, but…”
But I didn’t hear the rest. I rushed down the corridor, the walls lined with photos of animals under care, their eyes looking out at me like little guardians of hope. My breath quickened with each step, anticipation coiling tighter within me.
As I pushed through the door, there she was. Liora. The girl I had lost, yet didn’t recognize. Her hair framed her face, dark and thick, flowing in waves where once it had been neatly braided. She looked up, her wide eyes reflecting a mixture of fear and confusion. It was like staring at a stranger, and yet, every feature was hauntingly familiar.
“Liora?” I whispered, stepping forward. For a moment, time seemed to slow. She blinked, uncertainty clouding her expression. Then, in a fragile voice, she asked, “Who are you?”
“I’m your mother,” I said, tears brimming in my eyes. “It’s me. I’ve been looking for you.”
Her expression shifted from confusion to fear, as if the concept of home was a foreign language. “No… I don’t understand.” She took a step back, glancing around as if seeking an escape.
Just then, the door swung open, and a man stepped in. He wore a stern expression and reached for Liora. “Come on, sweetheart. It’s time to go,” he said firmly.
“Wait! Who are you?” I shouted, panic rising in my chest.
“I’m her guardian,” he replied, his voice cold and commanding.
Liora looked torn, glancing between him and me, uncertainty gripping her as she hesitated. “But… I…”
Before I could reach out to her, he grabbed her hand, his grip fierce and possessive. “Come on, Liora! We have to leave.”
“No! Don’t take her!” I screamed, but his hold was unyielding. In an instant, he pulled her away, and she was gone, her eyes wide with fear and confusion, leaving me with nothing but a crushing realization of what I had just lost again.
