Confronting Carter
As the reception carried on around me, the clinking of glasses faded into white noise. I spotted Carter across the hall, laughing with guests as if everything was normal. My fists clenched at my sides; I had to confront him. I strode over, the ground beneath my feet feeling unsteady.
“Carter,” I called out, cutting through the laughter. His smirk faded slightly as he turned to face me, the confidence in his stance unwavering.
“What now, Helen?” he asked, his tone dripping with condescension. “Don’t tell me you’re still upset over the little scene earlier.”
“You’re not entitled to my farm,” I shot back, my voice strong despite the tremor of fear that threaded through me. “You’ve always disdained it. Why the sudden interest?”
He leaned in, eyes narrowing, and a chill slid down my spine. “That place was never meant for someone like you. It should’ve been mine. You just don’t understand its true value.”
“Its value? It’s my home!” I felt the heat rise in my cheeks. “Your entitlement doesn’t change the years my family poured into that land!”
As I spoke, I could feel the eyes of the guests on us, the murmurs rising again. I took a breath, the truth bubbling inside me. “I know about the trust Thomas set up for the farm. You don’t get to take away my legacy.”
His smile faltered, the tension between us crackling like static in the air. “Trust? Is that what you think it is?”
Just as I opened my mouth to threaten him with what I knew, the lights flickered ominously overhead, stuttering like a heart skipping a beat. I glanced up and back at him, uncertainty creeping in. “What’s happening?”
Then, the hall plunged into darkness. Gasps and cries filled the air.
Chaos Unfolds
I stood frozen for a moment, my heart racing as I tried to adjust to the sudden blackout. Panic rustled through the crowd, the sound of chairs scraping against the floor like an orchestra of dread. Where was Emily? I needed to find her.
“Emily!” I called, my voice unsteady. My instinct screamed to locate my daughter amidst the confusion. I pushed past startled guests, fumbling my way through the encroaching darkness.
A loud crash echoed from somewhere nearby, followed by a collective gasp. “Mom!” I heard Emily’s voice, desperate but unable to discern where it was coming from. My heart dropped further.
Finally, the lights flickered back on, and I blinked against the brightness, scanning the chaotic scene. Tables were upended, glasses shattered on the floor, but my focus was on finding Emily.
And then I saw her.
Standing near the corner of the hall, her white gown gleaming like a beacon, she looked disoriented. But it was Carter beside her that made my stomach twist. He was holding his hands up, and they glistened odd shades of crimson.
Blood.
It pooled on his fingers, smeared across his pristine white tuxedo. My breath caught in my throat, and I gasped, horror shooting through me. “Emily!”
In an instant, all the noise faded away, and it felt like time itself had stopped. What had just happened? I stood there, rooted to the spot, unsure of what I was witnessing.
The beautiful wedding I had envisioned turned to a nightmare around me, and I could only wonder if I was powerless to save my family from this unfolding chaos.
