Gathering Strength
I stumbled out into the cool evening air, the chaos of the wedding fading behind me like a bad dream. The stars twinkled above, mocking my turmoil. I leaned against the rough wooden railing of the porch, trying to steady my breath.
Who did Carter think he was? The bitterness bubbled inside me, hot and sharp. But I knew I couldn’t let it consume me. My fingers shook as I pulled my phone from my pocket. I scrolled through the contacts, hesitating before tapping the familiar name I hadn’t called in years.
“Please pick up,” I whispered to the night, hoping for guidance. After two rings, the sound of a gravelly voice broke the silence on the other end. “Helen?” It was Jake, my late husband’s old friend and lawyer.
“You sound different, Helen. Is everything alright?”
The words pulled me back to a time when my life felt secure, before the shadows of greed crept into my family. I could almost hear Thomas’s laughter in the background, his warmth wrapping around me like a blanket. “No, Jake, it’s far from alright,” I responded, my voice barely above a whisper.
“What’s happened?” he asked, concern threading through his tone. I hesitated, the weight of everything I stood to lose settling on my chest like lead.
A Trust Revealed
When I finally mustered the courage to explain, Jake listened intently. “The farm, Helen… does Carter know about the trust?”
My heart raced as I realized what he meant. “Trust? What trust?” I echoed, confusion swirling in my mind.
“Thomas set it up years ago. To ensure the farm would always stay in the family. It’s protected, Helen. You can’t let him take it from you.”
Hope surged through me like a warm tide. “You’re sure?” I asked, a tremor in my voice.
“Absolutely. It’s legally binding. He can’t just demand the keys. You have rights.”
As I hung up, a spark of confidence ignited within me. I straightened my shoulders and headed back inside the hall, renewed purpose in my steps. But as I pushed open the heavy door, the laughter and music washed over me, blending with the tension still lingering in the air.
That’s when I caught Vanessa’s voice, the sharpness of her whisper slicing through the noise. “If she doesn’t comply, we’ll make sure she regrets it. She’ll be the one to ruin this wedding.”
My heart sank, despair mixing with anger. They were scheming against me. It was clearer than ever how far they were willing to go. I held my breath and stepped further into the hall, ready to confront Carter.
“I know the truth,” I called out, feeling empowered. “The trust is there, and I won’t let you take what’s mine!”
Just as I threatened to reveal the truth about the trust, the lights flickered and went out, plunging the hall into darkness.
