Inside the Courthouse
I took a deep breath as I stepped out of my mother’s car, the courthouse looming ahead like a fortress. Rain misted my hair, but I didn’t care. Aiden was just a few steps away, wrapped in Madeline’s laughter, a sound I once cherished.
“Just remember what you’re going to do, Alice,” I whispered to myself, fingers digging into my palm. I had a secret, one that filled me with a fierce determination.
As we entered the building, the scent of polished wood and stale coffee filled the air. My heart raced, and anxiety prickled my skin when I spotted familiar faces from our past. Friends of Aiden’s, former colleagues—anyone who had been part of our life together, all watching this public spectacle unfold.
“Stay strong,” I muttered, forcing a smile as I locked eyes with Madeline. Her eyes sparkled with a confidence that made my blood boil.
“Alice, are you all right?” Aiden turned back, his smile faltering for the briefest moment. It was almost laughable how he still thought he could play this charade.
“I’m fine,” I replied, voice steady as I willed my legs to move forward. “Just here for the show.”
As we walked into the courtroom, I reminded myself of my plan. I would reclaim the pieces of my life he’d shattered. I could do this.
The Courtroom Tension
Seated in the courtroom, the air felt charged. Aiden and Madeline exchanged affectionate glances like they were in a scene from a movie, oblivious to the chaos surrounding their staged romance. My skin crawled at the sight; it was like watching a train wreck in slow motion.
“You think this is over?” I remembered the last time I faced Aiden, when I’d threatened to expose everything he’d hidden beneath his polished facade. “I will make you pay for this,” I had said, feeling the strength swell in my chest.
“Order!” the judge barked, and I snapped back to reality. My heart pounded as the proceedings began, Aiden’s smirk cutting deep.
Just as I was losing myself in the noise, my phone vibrated furiously in my pocket. I fumbled to pull it out, my hands trembling.
“Alice! You need to know, Aiden is still hiding something about the finances. It’s urgent!”
The breath caught in my throat. Was it possible he could sink even lower? I glanced at Aiden, who was now grinning at Madeline, oblivious to the storm brewing in my mind.
“Get it together,” I whispered under my breath. This wasn’t over yet.
Suddenly, I noticed Aiden’s lawyer breaking away from the group, his eyes darting toward me. I felt a sudden pulse of adrenaline. What did he want?
He approached me slowly, his expression unreadable. “Alice,” he said quietly, “can we talk? I have information about Aiden’s hidden assets that you need to hear.”
