The Day I Unraveled My Wife’s Truth and My Son’s Future on His Eighteenth Birthday

Section 5

As Ethan sat in front of his computer, the faint glow illuminated his determined expression. He opened his social media accounts, searching for any trace of his mother, Lisa. His heart raced with equal parts hope and trepidation.

“Maybe she’s posted something,” he muttered to himself, scrolling through photos of smiling faces and family gatherings. The more he searched, the more it felt like he was chasing a ghost. He took a deep breath, focused on the screen, and widened his search.

“I have to find her,” he whispered, clenching his fists.

Across town, Mark paced the living room, the weight of guilt heavy on his shoulders. He replayed their argument again and again, each word echoing painfully in his mind. “What kind of father said those things?” His breath hitched. He picked up his phone, unable to call Ethan, but wanting desperately to reach out.

“What if she’s been watching us?” he muttered, suddenly struck by the thought. Mark’s fingers hovered over the keyboard, and he began to search for Lisa on social media as well, his heart pounding at the possibility.

But what would he find? His gut twisted with bitterness as he remembered the years he’d worked tirelessly, raising Ethan alone while Lisa had walked away. Thoughts of her new life gnawed at him. How could she build a family without them?

His search yielded a personal blog, seemingly written by someone named Lisa Morgan. The words poured out about family adventures, about life with her new husband and their children. The world he found felt like a betrayal.

“**She’s been living just fine without us, hasn’t she?**” he spat, the anger rising to the surface.

Meanwhile, Ethan’s phone pinged, and he noticed an old friend had messaged him. It was Sarah, asking how he was doing. He paused, a flicker of warmth breaking through the fog of anger and confusion. A quick response led to a back-and-forth that reminded him of simpler times, days before the discovery of the letter. Eventually, he blurted out, “I’m looking for my mom.”

“You should,” Sarah typed back quickly. “You deserve answers.”

Each clue Ethan found painted a clearer picture. “She’s in the city,” he whispered, excitement brimming. With every lead, he felt the walls that had long trapped him begin to crack. He was ready for the confrontation. “I need to know why…”

Unbeknownst to him, Mark had also uncovered something chilling. The blog hinted that Lisa frequented a local park, where she could have seen Ethan—where she could still be watching him grow. “She was closer than I thought,” Mark whispered, the realization sending shivers down his spine. “All this time…”

The air was thick with tension when Ethan finally stood in front of the park entrance. He spotted a familiar figure seated on a bench, her head bent over a book. Paralyzed with a mix of anticipation and dread, he approached. With every step, his heart hammered louder.

“Mom?” The word barely escaped his lips, yet it thundered in the silence between them.

Lisa looked up, her face a mixture of surprise and sorrow. “Ethan,” she breathed, as if seeing a ghost.

“Why did you leave?” He barely recognized the voice that emerged, frayed and trembling.

She hesitated, searching his eyes for understanding. “I… I never wanted to leave,” she finally confessed, her voice cracking. “I just couldn’t handle it. I felt like a failure.”

“A failure?” Ethan echoed, disbelief stinging. “You left us! Left me!”

“I thought it was for the best,” she replied, tears brimming. “I thought you’d be better off without me.”

“But you weren’t there! You didn’t even try!”

The emotions surged, and in the silence that followed, a new truth hung heavy in the air. A part of Ethan wanted to lash out, but something deeper yearned for reconciliation.

“I found your blog,” he said quietly, the words strained. “You’ve been living a lie.”

Lisa took a shaky breath. “I never wanted to lie, Ethan. But, you’re not the only one affected. I had to protect myself.”

“Protect yourself? What about me?” he countered, anger melting into confusion.

“I thought about you every day, but I didn’t know how to come back,” she replied, her voice laced with regret.

“You shouldn’t have left,” Ethan’s voice trembled. “You shouldn’t have.”

She looked away, and Ethan saw the flicker of shame. “I didn’t just leave you. I… I left your father too. But there’s something you need to know.”

“What? What is it?”

Lisa swallowed hard, the weight of her words hanging in the air. “Mark isn’t your biological father, Ethan. I lied about that too.”

The world fell away, and the ground beneath his feet felt like it had vanished. “What?” The word came out as a whisper. “What do you mean?”

“This is why I couldn’t face you all these years. I was scared…”

As the truth settled like heavy fog in Ethan’s mind, the confusion and betrayal twisted his heart, leaving him shattered. Mark’s image faded, replaced by uncertainty about his own identity.
