Searching for Answers
Ethan’s heart raced as he knocked on Sarah’s door. The familiar sound echoed in his chest, a reminder of simpler times. She opened the door, concern etched across her face.
“You okay?”
“Not really,” Ethan admitted, stepping inside. “We fought. I found a letter from my mom.”
“Oh, Ethan…” Sarah sat on the couch, patting the spot beside her. “What did it say?”
He sank down, the weight of the letter pressing against him. “She—she left because of me.” The words tasted bitter, like ashes in his throat.
“That’s not true,” she said, firm and resolute. “You know that.”
“But it is. She can’t even face me. How do I deal with that?”
“Remember when we used to talk about what it means to accept ourselves?” Sarah’s voice softened. “You’ve come so far, Ethan. Don’t let her choices define you.”
Her words hung in the air, and Ethan’s mind drifted back to countless childhood afternoons spent together, laughing and sharing dreams. “I just… I need to find her. I have to know why.”
“You’ll do what you need to do,” Sarah encouraged, her eyes shining with empathy. “But it’s about you now. You deserve to be happy.”
He nodded, resolve washing over him. “I’m going to confront her. I have to know. I can’t just let this go.”
Unraveling the Past
Mark stared blankly at the wall, Ethan’s words echoing in his mind. Guilt gnawed at him as he paced the living room. Why had he let the fight escalate like that? He needed answers, and the only way to find them was to dive into the past he’d buried deep.
Pulling out his old laptop, he logged into social media. The swirling colors of the screen felt like a portal into a world he had tried so hard to block out. He typed Lisa’s name tentatively, fingers trembling.
Nothing. He frowned, digging deeper through memories and old friends. As each click brought back fragments, a picture began to form.
“How did this happen?” he murmured to himself, eyes widening as he scrolled through a photo of a smiling Lisa—her face untouched by time.
She looked happy, surrounded by a family he had never known about. Each image was a dagger, twisting in his heart. He had dedicated eighteen years to build a life for Ethan, and she simply moved on as if they had never existed.
“What the hell?” he said aloud, the betrayal tasting acrid in his mouth. “How could she do this?”
Mark searched for old friends, people who might know what Lisa was doing. He made calls, sent messages, reaching out to every connection he had left.
“Yeah, she’s in town,” a friend finally responded hours later, a tone of disbelief in his voice. “I see her sometimes. She has a new family, you know?”
Mark’s stomach dropped. “What do you mean, ‘new family’?”
“She’s married. Has two kids, I think. They live not far from you. You must have seen them around.”
Mark froze, heart thundering in his chest. Could it be? Had she been living mere minutes from him all these years? He felt every breath constrict.
In a frenzy, he pieced together the clues. Each breadcrumb led him closer to the truth. “She’s been so close,” he muttered, clenching his fists. “What gives her the right?”
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting shadows across his living room, Mark’s resolve hardened. He would confront her; he had to. But the strangest thought nagged at him: What would Ethan think? Would they both be faced with the reality that Lisa had chosen a life without them both sitting right under her nose?
Mark’s breath hitched as a shiver ran down his spine. He braced himself for what lay ahead, caught between dread and determination.
