Investigation Under Duress
It was a strange mix of dread and determination that filled me as I dialed the number of my trusted lawyer. My heart thudded in my chest, painfully reminding me of its weakness. “Scott, I need a rundown of my finances. Now.”
“Of course, Harrison. Is everything okay?” he asked, concern lacing his voice.
“Just… just do it.” My tone was sharper than intended, but urgency coursed through me. I glanced around the sterile hospital room, the soft beeping of machines almost mocking my situation. I needed answers.
Minutes felt like hours. When Scott finally called back, I could hear the rustle of documents shuffling in the background. “There are some discrepancies in the recent transactions. I can send you the details.”
“What kind of discrepancies?” My palms grew clammy, the unease settling deeper in my stomach.
“Large sums missing from your company account. It’s over the last couple of months. Looks like funds were transferred to some personal accounts.”
“Personal accounts? Whose?” I barely managed to keep my voice steady.
“I’ll need to investigate further. But I can’t say right now.”
“Just find out, please.” I hung up, my mind racing. Caleb’s face flashed in my mind—my partner, my friend. I had trusted him. How could I have been so blind?
Suddenly, a jolt of pain struck my chest, sharper than anything I had felt before. I grasped at my gown, gasping for air. My body screamed at me, a stark reminder that time was running out. I had to get to the bottom of this before it was too late.
Confrontation and Revelation
The office smelled of fresh coffee and polished wood as I walked in. Caleb stood near the window, his back to me. I forced myself to smile, keeping my suspicions hidden. “Got a minute?”
He turned, his face lit by the harsh light filtering through the glass. “Sure, Harrison. What’s up?”
“I’ve been looking over the finances. Scott mentioned some… discrepancies.” I leaned back in the chair, feigning casualness. “What do you think?”
Caleb’s smile didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Oh, you know how things are in business. Sometimes numbers get mixed up. I can look into it for you.”
I studied him closely, the way his hands trembled slightly. “I appreciate that. But I’d like to know exactly what’s going on before I end up in a worse situation.”
“Of course, everything is under control, trust me.” His voice was smooth but lacked its usual confidence. I caught a flash of something—guilt, maybe—before he turned away from me again. A ripple of doubt surged through me. What more was he hiding?
As I left his office, my phone buzzed loudly in my pocket. I glanced at the screen and froze. An anonymous message appeared: *Suspicious bank transfer linked to Lauren. Check the accounts.*
My heart raced. Lauren? I had to know more. Standing in the hallway, a rush of adrenaline carried me forward. The pit in my stomach churned aggressively. She had been so reassuring, so supportive, but now the thought twisted like a knife.
I hurried home, images of Caleb and Lauren swirling in my mind, each turn revealing layers of betrayal I wouldn’t let myself see before. The front door creaked as I entered, a chill settling around me.
“Lauren?” I called, my voice echoing through the silent house.
Silence enveloped me, thick and suffocating. Then, I heard a rustle from the bedroom. My pulse quickened. I rushed down the hallway, my instincts screaming at me to hurry.
When I reached the bedroom door, my heart sank. There she was, packing a bag meticulously. “Lauren! What are you doing?”
She looked up, and her eyes widened, fear flashing briefly before she masked it with a façade of innocence. “Harrison! I—I was just…”
“No! Don’t lie to me!” My voice cracked as I stepped inside. “Where’s Caleb? What’s going on?”
Then I saw it—a stack of cash peeking out from under her clothes. My blood ran cold. She wasn’t just leaving; she was taking everything.
