My Life, My Legacy
The doctor said my heart was failing.
Five days.
That was all I had left.
I lay there, staring at the sterile ceiling, feeling the weight of my life pressing down on me. Every sacrifice flooded my mind. The countless hours spent at the workshop, the missed birthdays, the sleepless nights beside machines that hummed softly, relentless reminders of what it took to build Cole American Fixtures.
“You’ve done well, Harrison,” I muttered to myself, though no one was there to hear. My eyes drifted to the window, where the sun dipped low, casting shadows across the room. What would happen to my company? To the employees who counted on me? Would Lauren just sell everything off after I was gone?
She sat beside me, a fragile image of a grieving wife—so convincing, so poised. But there was something in her eyes that sharpened my instincts. The gentle squeeze of my hand felt more like a calculated gesture than an expression of love.
“I can’t imagine life without you,” she said, her voice trembling as she wiped away nonexistent tears. But how could she look so calm? It was as if she was already reveling in her future without me.
And then, for just a split second, the mask slipped. A flicker of something unshakable crossed her face—confidence, maybe. It made me uneasy. I had built a fortress of trust and loyalty around my life, but here I was, defenseless and vulnerable.
“What are you really thinking, Lauren?” I whispered, but she didn’t hear. Or maybe she didn’t want to.
Deception Behind the Grief
The room was filled with family and friends, all showering me with their love and support. In the corner, Lauren played her part, expertly weaving through conversations, laughter slipping off her tongue like sweet treachery. She was the dutiful wife, her face a polished mask of sorrow.
I watched her from my hospital bed, a spectator trapped in a nightmare. She leaned in close to my brother, her laugh tinkling like glass breaking. Does she think I can’t see her? Does she think I can’t hear the lies behind those smiles?
When the room cleared, I could finally confront her. “You’ve been so strong,” I began, keeping my voice steady. “What will you do after…?”
“You don’t need to worry about that now, Harrison,” she interrupted, her voice silky, a hint of something sinister weaving through her words. “I’ll figure things out.”
“What do you mean ‘figure things out’?” My heart raced at the thought of her plans, especially with Caleb. Just the thought of him made my skin crawl. “What do you have in mind?”
She tilted her head, an almost playful smirk playing on her lips. “Oh, you know, just… making some changes.”
“What kind of changes?” I pressed, each word dripping with urgency.
“Change is inevitable, my love. Just like… what happens next.” Her gaze turned sly, and dread coiled in my stomach. “Caleb and I won’t have to wait much longer.”
I felt my chest tighten, panic rising like bile. Could she really be plotting something with him? “You and Caleb? What about our—”
“Trust me, Harrison,” she interjected, that confident glint back in her eyes. “Everything will be just fine. We’ve got plans.”
As she turned to leave the room, my heart raced with the weight of her words. How deep did their scheming run? My mind churned with every possible betrayal.
And then I saw it: as she stepped out the hospital doors, her phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen and a smirk crept across her face, full of anticipation. I felt a cold fear grip my chest. What could possibly make her smile like that?
