Confrontation Outside the Venue
Emma’s heart raced as Jonathan stormed out of the venue, his dark suit contrasting sharply against the bright afternoon sun. “Why didn’t you tell me about them?” he demanded, his voice low but edged with fury.
She took a breath, steadying her nerves. “Because I didn’t think you’d want to know. You made it clear I was worthless…and that I was just a mistake.” Her gaze met his, unwavering.
“You think you can just show up here with our kids and expect me to—” Jonathan’s voice cracked, a mix of anger and betrayal.
“They deserve to know their father, Jonathan, but I didn’t want them to be treated like pawns in your game,” Emma replied, her voice rising. “I wanted to protect them.” The twins, Ella and Leo, watched from the sidelines, their innocent faces caught in the tug-of-war of emotions.
“Protect them from what? From me?” Jonathan scoffed, glancing back at the guests peeking through the venue doors. “Look at you, Emma. You think you’ve won? You look pathetic.”
“And you think this wedding will fill the void?” Emma shot back. “You’re still that same arrogant man who drove me away.” There was a silence, thick with memories and unspoken words.
Just then, Vanessa appeared beside Jonathan, her expression unreadable. The tension thickened as she studied the scene before her. “What’s going on here?” she asked, her tone laced with concern.
Jonathan turned, irritation flashing in his eyes. “Nothing for you to worry about, Vanessa.” He had almost forgotten she was there, glancing back at Emma, who was now glowing with unexpected strength.
“Is it nothing?” Vanessa questioned, eyeing Emma’s defiant stance. “Because it looks like something.”
Conversations and Hard Truths
Inside the wedding venue, Emma found a quiet corner with Vanessa, the cool air of the reception hall contrasting sharply with the heat of their earlier confrontation.
“I can’t believe how he treated you,” Vanessa began, her voice barely above a whisper. “You don’t deserve that.”
Emma sighed, the weight of her past flooding back. “I struggled to find my footing after he left. I was just trying to survive.” She clasped her hands together, trying to steady the memories coursing through her.
“He made it sound like you were nothing.” Vanessa shifted, a hint of empathy in her eyes. “He never appreciated the sacrifices you made.”
“It was more than just that. I thought he wanted something different,” Emma admitted, her gaze lowering. “And I thought keeping our children away from him was the right decision.”
Vanessa frowned, a shadow passing over her face. “But were you happy? Really?”
Emma felt a flicker of warmth in her chest. “I found happiness in them,” she said, nodding toward Ella and Leo who were busy playing together across the hall. “But I wonder if I made the right choice.”
“You chose to protect them,” Vanessa said softly. “But what about you? Do you think he would have loved them?”
Emma opened her mouth to respond when suddenly Jonathan appeared at the corner of the room, his expression unreadable. The underlying tension pulsed in the air as the three of them stood there, unflinching.
“We need to talk,” Jonathan said, and at that moment, the air shifted. Emma braced herself, knowing he was about to challenge everything she held dear.
Before the conversation could escalate, Jonathan’s mother, Rosalind, rushed into the venue, her face flushed with urgency. “Jonathan, you need to listen to me—”
But before she could continue, Vanessa’s phone buzzed violently in her pocket. She glanced at the screen, her eyes widening. “Oh my God…”
Emma turned to her, confusion rippling through her. “What is it?”
Vanessa’s voice trembled as she looked up, dread creeping into her expression. “It’s about Jonathan’s financial troubles…”
