Section 5
“Thomas!” I shook him, my heart thundering in my chest. “Wake up, please!” The flickering light cast eerie shadows across his face, but there was no response. His eyes fluttered, then closed, lost to whatever world he inhabited just moments ago.
“Thomas, don’t leave me! Please!” Desperation clawed at my throat. Did he remember all those moments we shared? The laughter, the late-night talks, our dreams? I needed him to come back to me. I needed to know he was real.
“I remember… everything…” he mumbled, his voice barely audible. “They took me—couldn’t escape…”
His words melted into silence as he slumped against the ground. Panic surged through me. I leaned closer, my hands trembling as I checked for a pulse. “Please, somebody help!” I cried out, my voice echoing against the cold walls.
As if in response, the door behind me swung open with a creak, a gust of stale air rushing past. I turned, squinting into the darkness that enveloped the alley. Figures loomed in the shadows, watching.
“Clara…” I heard a voice hiss, sending chills down my spine. My breath quickened, the realization crashing over me like an unexpected wave. I was not safe here. Not anymore.

“What do you want?” I shouted, my voice cracking. The figures stepped closer, their faces hidden beneath hoods and dark masks. It was a haunting image that sent my heart racing. “Get away from us!”
One of them chuckled, a sound devoid of warmth. “You shouldn’t have followed him, Clara.” The voice was low and ominous, an echo of dread. “He isn’t who you think he is.”
I glanced down at Thomas, his chest rising and falling weakly. “No! He’s my husband!” I protested, the words tasting bitter on my tongue.
“We didn’t want to hurt him,” the voice continued, stepping closer, illuminated by the dim light. “But he was too valuable to lose. The experiments—”
My mind reeled back to the reports, the hospital’s words about a “lost case.” “What experiments?” I breathed, the weight of their implications crashing down on me. “What happened to him?”
“He was never dead,” the figure replied, its expression obscured but the cruelty evident. “He was in a facility for severe trauma, and when they labeled him lost, he became our primary subject.”
“You’re lying!” I shouted, but the voice felt like a knife, cutting through my reality. I wanted to deny it, to believe that the man before me was my Thomas. I was desperate for that truth.
“The real Thomas is still missing, Clara. This is just a test subject who stole his identity. You were part of our plan, drawn in by your grief.”
The words hit me like a punch to the gut, the gravity of the betrayal shattering my world. “No… No!” I stumbled back, the truth coiling around my heart like a serpent.
“We’ll need him back,” the figure said, voice chillingly calm. “And now that you’ve seen, you can’t leave.”
As the figures moved forward, I realized the terrible weight of my actions. I had followed an illusion, cherished a shadow, and now I stood on the precipice of losing everything all over again. Thomas was gone, and I was left with nothing but a haunting echo of his memory.
