Confronting the Forgotten
As I stepped closer, every inch felt like a mile. My heart raced, a drum echoing in my ears that drowned out the distant city sounds. Thomas stood there, illuminated by the flickering bulb, but he wasn’t the same man I remembered.
“Thomas?” I called, my voice trembling. He turned slowly, confusion etched across his features. Those familiar eyes—were they really his? Or had I manufactured them from memory?
But as I drew near, the shadows revealed what I couldn’t bear to see: bruises on his arms and a strange bandage wrapped tightly around his wrist. “Clara…” he whispered, his voice cracking like old glass. “I… I don’t understand.”
Every instinct screamed at me to hold him, to touch him, but I hesitated. “What happened to you?” I asked, desperate to unravel the mystery of his presence.
His brow furrowed deeper, eyes darting around the dim room. “I’ve been… trapped. I couldn’t escape. They won’t let me go.”
Trapped? The word struck me like a physical blow. My thoughts swirled as my heart did a somersault. “Who? Who has you?”
“I can’t remember everything… just flashes,” he murmured, pressing a hand against his temple. “I need to—”
Before he could finish, the flickering light above us flickered out with a pop. Darkness enveloped the room, and I felt my breath quicken. “Thomas?” I whispered, feeling the void close in on us.
Unraveling Truths
“I’m here,” he said, voice barely above a whisper, yet it felt far away. I strained to see him in the thickening shadows. “Clara, you need to understand; they think—”
He stumbled, leaning against the cold wall for support, and in that moment, a jolt of fear shot through me. “What happened to you?”
“I was in a facility,” he continued, his eyes wild with desperation. “After…” His voice trailed off, a painful memory hovering behind his gaze. “They said I was lost to an aggressive viral infection—”
My heart sank, pieces of the past five months began to click together in a horrifying mosaic. “You’ve been alive all this time?” I gasped, struggling to comprehend the impossible.
“I thought I was dead!” he exclaimed, his breath coming in rapid bursts. “But I wasn’t. They—”
Suddenly, he recoiled, clutching his head in agony, eyes wide with panic. “Clara! They are coming for me!”
“What do you mean? Who is coming?” I reached out, fear clenching my gut. This couldn’t be how our reunion ended.
But just as I began to gather my wits, Thomas crumpled to the floor, his body trembling. I knelt beside him, shaking his shoulders gently, pleading, “Stay with me! Please!”
As I called for help, the door we’d entered through swung open abruptly. The shadows spilled into the room, and I turned, dread pooling in my chest as I realized we were not alone.
Figures lurked in the alley, their features obscured by the darkness. Panic rose within me, and the hair on my arms stood on end. “Thomas!” I screamed, desperate to wake him, but the looming shapes closed in.
