Desperate Conversations
Florence arrived just as I was pouring a glass of wine, the heavy weight of anxiety making my hands tremble. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” she said, her brow furrowed in concern.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady my racing heart. “It’s Hannah. I’m worried about her and Brandon. I’ve been keeping track of her reactions, and it’s… well, it’s alarming.”
“What do you mean?”
“She cries when he’s near, Flo. It’s not just fussiness. It’s like she’s terrified. I need someone to help me watch him.”
Florence’s expression shifted to one of resolve. “Let’s devise a plan. We can watch him when you’re at work. Maybe we can catch something on camera.”
“I’ve already set up cameras. I just can’t look at the footage while he’s home. It feels wrong,” I admitted, my stomach twisting.
“Then let’s do this,” she encouraged, pulling out her phone. “We’ll go over after your next shift. Keep an eye on him.”
Hope flickered in my chest, though it was quickly snuffed by a mounting dread. Just as we started solidifying the details of our plan, my phone buzzed with an incoming call from my sister, Jess.
“Hey, Lauren. I need to talk to you about Brandon.”
A chill swept through me. “What do you mean?”
“There have been… rumors, allegations from other family members. You need to be careful.”
I felt the room spin, her words echoing in my mind like a relentless drumbeat. “Allegations? What are you talking about?”
“I can’t go into details, but it’s not just you. Others have noticed things, Lauren. You should trust your instincts.”
As I hung up, the walls around me felt like they were closing in. My heart raced; was I blind to something darker? Florence was watching me closely, her eyes wide.
The Confrontation
That evening, I confronted Brandon as soon as he walked through the door. “We need to talk about Hannah.”
“What now? I thought we were past this,” he replied, frustration lining his voice.
“I’m serious. She’s afraid of you. Jess just told me about some troubling rumors about your behavior.”
His eyes narrowed, and I could see a flicker of something—was it anger or fear? “You’re just being paranoid, Lauren. You’re exhausted. This is all in your head.”
“No, it’s not in my head! I’ve seen it, Brandon. I have proof.”
“Proof?” He crossed his arms, the tension palpable. “You’re going to trust a few moments of a baby crying?”
“It’s more than that! Something is wrong,” I insisted, desperation creeping into my voice. “I’ve recorded it all.”
I turned away, my heart pounding. The cameras in our home felt like eyes watching a scene unfold, capturing moments I was terrified to replay. “I need to see the footage again,” I said, moving toward my laptop.
Brandon stepped in front of me. “You don’t need to do this, Lauren. You’re hurting yourself.”
But I pushed past him, desperation lending strength to my resolve. I opened the recording app and clicked on the latest footage, my hands shaking. I felt the air grow heavy with unspoken tension, every second stretching out like an eternity.
As the screen lit up with the sight of the living room, panic settled in. I scrubbed through the footage, expecting to see my baby’s innocent face intermingled with clues. But all that appeared was static.
“What the hell?”
I gasped, my throat tightening. “Brandon, the footage… it’s gone!”
He stepped closer, his demeanor shifting alarmingly. “What do you mean? You can’t just erase things.”
“But it was there! I swear! Someone’s tampered with it!”
Suddenly, a horrible realization set in. The recordings hadn’t just vanished; they’d been manipulated. How could I have been so blind?
“You did this, didn’t you?”
His eyes turned cold, a flicker of something dark passing over his face. “You’re overreacting, Lauren.”
But in that moment, I understood. He had been covering his tracks all along.
