Section 5
Mara sat at the small table in the café, her hands trembling around the coffee cup, the steam blurring her vision. The soft chatter around her felt distant, almost muffled, as she tried to focus on Malcolm’s words.
“Evander is in deep trouble, Mara,” Malcolm said, leaning in closer. The concern in his eyes made her stomach twist. “There’s a fraud investigation at Northvale Capital. Your husband is at the center of it.”
“Fraud? He’s a CFO. He wouldn’t…”
Malcolm cut her off, his voice tense. “I wish that were true, but I have the documents. It’s more than just financial mismanagement. He’s been moving money around, hiding it.”
Mara felt the room spin. “Why are you telling me this?”
“Because you need to know what you’re up against in this divorce. This isn’t just emotional betrayal; it’s financial too.”
“Financial? But how will this affect… I mean, what about Iris?”
Malcolm sighed, his gaze softening. “If he’s found guilty, it could ruin his reputation, and that could impact your settlement. If he’s hiding money, he could try to leave you with nothing.”
Each word weighed heavily on Mara’s heart, a growing sense of dread pooling in her stomach. “What do I do?”
“You need to prepare yourself. Gather everything you can. I’ll help you,” he offered, an unusual determination in his voice.
Mara felt a flicker of hope mixed with fear. “Can you promise I’ll be safe?”
“I can’t promise anything, but the truth is your best weapon. Use it.”
As she left the café, her phone pinged. It was Iris: “Can I stay at Emily’s for the weekend?” A wave of loneliness crashed over Mara, pressing down on her like a weight. What was going on in her daughter’s world while her own crumbled around her?
She looked back at the café, the warmth inside now a distant memory. The walls felt like they were closing in. What did she know about Evander anymore? The man she had trusted, the father of her child, was now a stranger embroiled in deception.
Section 6
Mara arrived home, her heart pounding as she contemplated her next move. With the evidence Malcolm had shared, she had to confront Evander. She pushed the door open, the familiar creaking sound now feeling ominous.
“Evander!” she called, her voice echoing through the silent house. “We need to talk.”
In the living room, she froze. Boxes were stacked everywhere, tape crisscrossing over them, and Evander was hurriedly shoving clothes into a duffel bag. Sable’s perfume clung to the air like a taunt.
“What the hell is this?” Mara shouted, her pulse racing. “Are you leaving with her?”
Evander turned, his expression a mix of irritation and guilt. “Mara, this isn’t what it looks like—”
“It looks like you’re running away! What about the divorce?”
He scoffed, frustration bubbling to the surface. “This isn’t my fault. You’re the one who—”
“I found out about the investigation, Evander. How long have you been hiding money?”
“I was trying to protect us! You wouldn’t understand.”
“Protect us? By lying? By cheating?” She stepped closer, fists clenched. “How deep does it go?”
Evander’s eyes darted to the side, and the shift in his body language sent a jolt through her. “Just drop it, Mara.”
“No! I won’t drop it. You’re hiding things from me, and I won’t let you just walk away!”
Then she saw it—a glimmer of something on the coffee table. Papers? She rushed over, heart hammering as she grabbed the document. It was a bank statement, revealing large sums leaving their joint account.
“You’ve transferred our money, haven’t you?” she gasped, the realization crashing over her. “This isn’t just about Sable; it’s about you escaping!”
Evander’s face turned pale. “I was going to explain everything!”
“Explain what? That you planned to leave me destitute?” Tears streamed down her face, anger and despair mingling. “What about Iris? You can’t just take everything!”
“It’s not like that!” he shouted, but his voice faltered. The panic in his eyes betrayed him.
“You’ve made plans, haven’t you? You’re leaving together, and I’m just supposed to accept that?”
In that moment, the weight of the world crashed onto Mara. Evander’s betrayal was deeper than she had ever imagined. Not just love lost, but also a plot to strip her of everything—her stability, her future, even her daughter’s safety.
She staggered back, clutching the evidence to her chest. Everything she thought she knew shattered into pieces. Evander wasn’t just walking away; he was disappearing with their life’s savings, leaving her completely devastated.
