Confrontation and Betrayal
Mara stepped into the living room, her heart pounding. The air was thick with the scent of cardboard and packing tape. “Evander?” she called, her voice shaky.
There he was, hunched over, shoving clothes into a duffel bag. “What are you doing?” she demanded, incredulous.
He paused, glancing up with a mix of surprise and irritation. “I’m moving out. It’s time.”
<p“Time?” She clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. “Did you really think I wouldn’t notice? You have some explaining to do.”
Evander stood straight, shoulders squared. “This isn’t a discussion, Mara. We’ve already settled everything.”
“No, we haven’t!” Her voice rose, echoing off the walls. “What about the money? You’re hiding it, aren’t you?”
A disdainful smile crept onto his lips. “This is just business. You wouldn’t understand.”
“I may not understand, but I know when I’m being taken for a fool!”
Evander’s expression hardened. “You’re overreacting. Sable is just helping me with—”
“Just helping you?” she interrupted, disbelief lacing her voice. “You expect me to believe that after everything? You’re with her, Evander!”
“It’s not what you think!” He was defensive, shifting uncomfortably as if she had struck him. “You’re twisting this into something it’s not.”
A bitter laugh escaped her lips. “Then tell me the truth! What is it with you two?”
“You want the truth?” He loomed closer, his voice low and dangerous. “I’m going to marry her, okay? After the divorce is finalized, we’re engaged.”
The words slammed into her like a freight train. Mara staggered back, her world crumbling. “You can’t be serious.”
“I am. This is my life now,” he said, his eyes cold.
Devastation washed over her, leaving her gasping for breath. “You’ve destroyed everything for a new life?”
“I had to make a choice,” he spat, then turned away, dismissing her completely.
Regaining Independence
Shakily, Mara stepped outside into the crisp air, the shock of Evander’s revelation still buzzing in her mind. She needed Lena. Now.
When she arrived at Lena’s apartment, the familiar warmth surrounded her, but she felt a chill within. “Lena, I can’t believe this is happening,” she said, tears brimming in her eyes.
“You’re stronger than this, Mara,” Lena said, wrapping her arms around her. “He’s a coward.”
“A coward who’s marrying someone else.” The words felt like poison. “What do I do?”
Lena pulled back, her expression resolute. “We’re going to fight. You deserve your fair share of everything. Let’s go over your assets.”
Mara nodded, a flicker of hope igniting in her gut. Together, they hashed out a plan: every transaction, every bill, nothing would go unchecked. “I’ll get everything I deserve,” she murmured under her breath.
“You’re not alone in this,” Lena reassured, determination echoing in her voice.
Just then, Mara’s phone buzzed. The name on the screen made her heart race: Malcolm, their accountant.
“It’s him,” she whispered, anxiety creeping in.
“Answer it,” Lena urged. “Maybe he has something useful.”
“Hello, Malcolm?” Mara said, trying to keep her voice steady.
“Mara,” he replied, his tone serious. “I need to talk to you. It’s about Evander.”
Her stomach twisted. “What’s going on?”
“He’s under investigation for fraud, and it’s serious,” Malcolm revealed. “I have documents that could change everything for you.”
Mara’s breath caught in her throat. “What do you mean?”
“There’s a larger scheme at play, and it could drastically impact your divorce settlement.”
