In the Chaos
Before Brielle could process the situation, a loud crash echoed from the kitchen, followed by frantic shouting. The clattering of pots and pans sent her heart racing again. “What now?” she thought, ready to bolt.
“I’ll be right back,” she whispered to Everett, her voice trembling as she reluctantly placed Elodie back in his arms. “Please, keep her safe.”
Brielle dashed toward the kitchen, the sound of chaos growing louder with every step. The sight was overwhelming—three cooks were yelling over a toppled stack of plates, while another was scrambling to form a barricade against a rampaging prep cook who had just dropped a massive container of vegetables.
“Get it together! We can’t afford to lose any more tonight!”
The urgency made her stomach churn. Hadn’t there already been enough chaos for one day? But she couldn’t ignore the worry that clawed at her, the need to ensure everything was okay in the kitchen.
“What happened?” she demanded, cutting through the noise.
“Just a freak accident!” one chef shouted back. “But if we don’t fix it, we’ll be in big trouble!”
She didn’t have time to help. An icy chill washed over her as she glanced back toward Everett’s office. “What if something happens while I’m not there?” The thought turned her stomach.
As she made her way back, Brielle slowed when she noticed Jordan and Rochelle hunched conspiratorially near the door to Everett’s office. Their whispers turned into a hissing debate, and Brielle’s breath caught in her throat.
“She’s here right now. We can’t just leave her with him,” Jordan said, his tone sharp.
“Look, if we present a united front, we can show the court that she’s an unfit mother. It’s that simple!” Rochelle replied, casting a glance toward Brielle’s direction.
Brielle’s heart dropped. They were plotting against her, and the realization hit like a punch to the gut. “What are they planning?” She felt a rush of heat and urgency. She tiptoed closer, straining to catch every word.
Unveiling the Truth
“She’s got no money and no support,” Rochelle continued, her voice low but venomous. “The moment we get in front of a judge, it’s over for her. We’ll take Elodie, and she’ll have nothing.”
Jordan’s expression was dark. “I can’t believe she brought the baby to work. She’s asking for trouble.”
Brielle stood frozen, panic coursing through her veins. They were not only after her daughter but were using her dire circumstances against her. “This can’t be happening,” she thought, feeling a wave of nausea wash over her.
“And if I can get the right evidence,” Rochelle added with a smirk, “this will be a piece of cake.”
But then a voice broke through the haze—Everett, stepping out of the office, an imposing figure with a calm urgency. “What’s going on here?”
Rochelle turned, feigning innocence. “Just discussing a few work-related things.”
“Lies,” Brielle thought, the heat of their conspiracy igniting a fury in her. She needed to defend herself. “You’re plotting, and I won’t let you take my daughter,” she blurted out, forcing her voice to rise above the tension.
Everett’s gaze sharpened on them, a flicker of understanding sparking in his eyes. “Brielle?”
“They’re trying to take Elodie,” she said, her voice raw with desperation. “They think I’m unfit!”
“Enough!” Everett barked, silencing everyone. “I have been looking into your situation, Rochelle. The moment you threatened Brielle, I began investigating.”
“What?” Brielle gasped. “You’ve been…”
“I’ve gathered evidence against you,” he continued, fixing his eyes on Rochelle. “And it’s only a matter of time before I expose you.”
Brielle felt a mix of fear and wonder. “Is this real? He’s helping me?” Yet the weight of the situation sat heavily on her chest, the implications spinning in her mind.
Everett stepped closer to Brielle, his expression softening. “You’re not alone. I want to protect you and Elodie.”
But just as relief began to bubble up inside her, doubt loomed. How could she trust this man? The stakes were too high. The very people threatening her were now caught in their own trap. Brielle stood at a crossroads, her heart racing, realizing just how tangled this web had become.
