A Mother With No Good Choices
Brielle’s heart raced as she stepped into Everett Calloway’s office. Elodie lay silently against his chest, her tiny breaths steady and peaceful. What happened? How did my baby end up here?
Everett looked up at her, an unsettling calm in his eyes. The air felt charged, heavy with unspoken words. Brielle’s mind whirled as she took a step closer, her palms clammy against her sides.
“I didn’t know where to put her,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “She was safe in the linen room.” Panic drummed in her ears, drowning out the bustling restaurant above them.
Everett tilted his head, studying her. “She’s fine here, Brielle,” he replied softly. “You know I wouldn’t let anything happen to her.” But his words felt like a fragile bandage over a gaping wound, and she wasn’t sure it would hold.
“You shouldn’t have taken her,” Brielle said, her sanity teetering with each passing second. “You don’t understand—”
Fury and Desperation
Without warning, the door burst open. Rochelle stormed in, her heels clicking angrily against the wooden floor. “What the hell is going on?” she demanded, her voice slicing through the tension like a knife.
Brielle felt a rush of heat rise to her cheeks. “I… I needed to keep her safe,” she stammered, her desperation flaring. “I couldn’t find a sitter!”
“This is not how you handle things!” Rochelle snapped, her eyes narrowing. “You should have called someone. Do you think it’s appropriate to bring a baby into this workspace?”
Brielle clenched her fists, ready to defend her choices. “I was left with no options, Rochelle! Mrs. Keene canceled. I had to do what I thought was best.”
Rochelle stepped closer, her voice dripping with condescension. “A mother who hides her baby behind restaurant supplies has no business calling herself responsible.”
Brielle felt her chest constrict. “Please, I’m doing my best. I can’t lose her.”
“You should be fired for this,” Rochelle sneered. “I’ll be calling security.”
Brielle’s heart dropped. She could already see it—the officers showing up, hauling her out. What would happen to Elodie then? Just as despair settled in her gut, Everett’s voice broke through the storm.
“Rochelle, wait.” He shifted in his chair, cradling Elodie as if she were the most precious thing in the world. “I’m aware of Brielle’s situation. She’s been under a lot of pressure, and I think… I think I can help.”
Hope flickered inside Brielle. “You would really do that?” she asked, her voice a whisper. “You’d let me bring Elodie to work?”
Everett nodded, his gaze steady. “I believe we can find a way to accommodate her without jeopardizing your position.”
But before Brielle could fully grasp the weight of his offer, a shadow loomed at the doorway. Jordan, her ex, stepped into view, his eyes blazing with determination. “Where’s my daughter?” he barked, cutting through the fragile moment.
Brielle’s stomach twisted. “Jordan, not now—”
He surged forward, anger radiating from him. “You think this is how a mother behaves? Hiding her in a restaurant?”
Just as Brielle felt the ground slip beneath her, he lunged toward Elodie, and Brielle screamed in alarm. “No!”
