Tips for the Best Result
Apply the cream to clean, dry skin. Residual moisture can dilute the baking soda, reducing its ability to gently exfoliate overnight. Pat your face dry with a soft towel, then wait about 30 seconds to ensure any remaining water evaporates before you spread the cream.
Use only a thin layer. Baking soda is mildly abrasive; a heavy coating can cause micro‑irritation, leading to redness instead of soothing benefits. A pea‑sized amount for the entire face is sufficient. You’ll feel a faint tingling sensation when the cream contacts your skin—that’s the sign it’s working, but if the sensation turns into burning, rinse immediately.
Allow the cream to work while you sleep. The overnight period gives the skin time to benefit from the gentle alkalinity of baking soda, which can help balance pH and promote cell turnover. Waking up after at least six hours ensures the active process has taken place.
Follow with a moisturizer if your skin feels tight. Baking soda can temporarily strip a thin layer of natural oils, so sealing the skin with a light, non‑comedogenic moisturizer helps lock in moisture and maintain barrier function.
Common Mistakes
Using too much water. When the mixture becomes runny, it won’t stay on the skin long enough to act, and excess moisture can dilute the alkaline effect. If the cream runs off your face within seconds, add a pinch more baking soda to thicken it.
Applying on broken or inflamed skin. Baking soda can sting on compromised skin, causing discomfort and possibly worsening irritation. Always avoid areas with open cuts, severe acne lesions, or active eczema.
Skipping a patch test. Some people are sensitive to the alkaline nature of baking soda. Before using the cream on your whole face, apply a tiny amount to the inside of your wrist and wait 15 minutes. If you notice redness, itching, or burning, discontinue use.
Leaving the cream on for too long after waking. While a short overnight exposure is beneficial, leaving the residue on for an extended period in the morning can lead to dryness. Rinse gently with lukewarm water and follow with a moisturizer.
