I Discovered My Husband’s $1.2 Million Secret the Day Before Our Divorce Was Finalized

Confrontation

Mara’s heart raced as she stared at the glowing screen of Evander’s phone. “What was that? Who’s Sable?” The words slipped out, each syllable wrapped in disbelief.

Evander’s expression shifted, shadows flickering across his face. “It’s not what you think, Mara.”

“Not what I think?” she snapped, her pulse pounding in her ears. “It sounds exactly like what I think!”

His jaw tightened. “It’s a business relationship. That message—”

“A business relationship?” She felt her skin prickle with indignation. “You’ve been sleeping with her, haven’t you? Don’t lie to me!”

Evander leaned back, arms crossed. “This isn’t the time, Mara. We’re on the brink of splitting everything. Let’s not turn this into a circus.”

A circus. The word hung in the air, weighty and accusatory. Mara felt her throat tighten. “I have every right to know the truth. You’re on the way out the door with her, and you want to pretend this is all just business?”

“This isn’t about you and me anymore. This is about moving forward.” He pushed a hand through his hair, frustration etched across his features.

“Moving forward? You mean running away,” she spat. “You’ve been planning this, haven’t you? Behind my back, with her? You ended our marriage with someone else waiting in the wings.”

“Stop! You’re making assumptions. Everything I do is for the kids, for us to be stable.”

Mara shook her head, tears stinging her eyes. “Stable? This is your idea of stability? You’re a liar! I can’t trust you!”

He glanced away, the lie stifling the air between them. “You’re being emotional. Just take a breath and think rationally.”

“Rational?” Mara’s voice cracked. “You’re the one who threw our life away. Do you even care?”

Evander’s eyes narrowed. “I care about the settlement. Let’s just get through this.”

“Get through this?” The room felt like it was closing in on her. “You’ve already checked out. You’re just leaving me to sort through the wreckage.”

Silence followed, heavy and suffocating. Each second stretched, and Mara felt the emptiness in her chest widen. “Look at what we’ve become.”

Evander’s silence was more telling than words.

“I hate you for this,” she whispered, the confession cutting her with its truth.

Evander stared, but he didn’t reply, and his hands still trembled as he turned away. Mara felt more isolated than ever, the chasm between them yawning wide.

Investigation

After the confrontation, Mara sat in her car, letting the weight of the truth settle over her like a thick fog. “I need to know,” she murmured, gripping the steering wheel. She had to investigate, to uncover whatever else Evander was hiding.

Gathering her courage, she walked into the office of their accountant, Malcolm. The sterile smell of paper and cologne was unsettling. “I need to talk about our finances,” she said, her voice steadier than she felt.

Malcolm looked taken aback. “Of course, Mara. It’s not often you come in without Evander.”

She nodded, forcing herself to focus. “I’ve noticed some discrepancies. Can you show me the recent transactions?”

As he clicked through their accounts, the numbers blurred in her vision. “Everything seems normal,” Malcolm said, but Mara’s gut twisted.

“Show me everything,” she insisted.

He hesitated but finally opened up a spreadsheet filled with line items. A series of transactions caught her eye. “What’s this?”

“That’s… unusual,” he said, squinting at the screen. “It’s not typical for such large amounts to go to offshore accounts.”

Her breath caught in her throat. “Offshore accounts? What do you mean?”

“It suggests he may be hiding money,” Malcolm said, glancing at her. “But I wouldn’t jump to conclusions.”

Mara’s heart raced. “No, I need to know. Does it lead to Sable?”

“I can dig deeper, but this is definitely worth looking into.”

Mara thanked him, her mind racing as she stepped outside. Her phone chimed, breaking the silence. It was a text from Iris.

“Can I stay at a friend’s house for the weekend?”

The words pierced her. Even Iris felt the distance, the growing divide in their family. Mara squeezed her eyes shut, grappling with the shadows of loss overwhelming her.

As she walked to her car, the weight of the unusual transactions loomed large in her mind, each step echoing her fear that Evander’s deceit ran deeper than she had ever imagined.
