Beneath the White Roses
“That’s Mariana’s bracelet,” I said quietly, my voice trembling with barely contained rage.
Camille’s smile widened, a victorious glint in her eyes. “Well, she won’t be needing it anymore, will she?”
I could feel the heat of anger rising in my chest as I shifted Sophia on my shoulder. The soft weight of her head resting against me reminded me why I had to remain calm.
Ethan lingered nearby, his breath steady, seemingly unfazed by the chaos surrounding us. I clenched my fists at my sides. “How can you act like this?” I demanded.
He shrugged, adjusting his tie. “It’s a funeral, Teresa. We’re all grieving differently.”
I cast a quick glance at Camille, who was adjusting the bracelet on her wrist as if it were a trophy. “That’s not grief. That’s arrogance.”
The murmurs of the gathered guests swirled around us like a bitter wind. The air reeked of lilies, but I couldn’t shake the sickly scent of deceit.
I forced myself to focus on my granddaughter, her innocent face hiding from this dark spectacle. But Sophia could sense my tension, clinging tighter.
I turned back to Ethan, frustration boiling over. “You should be a wreck right now. Where’s the sorrow? Where’s the guilt?”
Ethan’s gaze hardened. “Mariana’s gone. That’s what matters.”
I felt a chill crawl up my spine. What mattered? What mattered to him?
And then I saw it: the faint bruises along Mariana’s wrists, just peeking out from beneath the cuffs of her blouse.
What the hell had happened in those final hours?
“Don’t just stand there,” Camille cooed. “You can’t blame him for everything, can you?”
I stepped closer, lowering my voice as I searched Ethan’s face for remorse. “You knew she was unhappy, didn’t you? You knew she had fears.”
“Enough,” Ethan snapped, his tone icy. “You’re not helping Sophia by making this worse.”
The tension escalated. I could feel the chaos swirling, drawing me in like a storm.
“I’m protecting her,” I countered, desperate. “From you. From all of this.”
Camille took a step forward, invading my space. “You think you know her? You don’t know anything.”
My heart raced as I battled the urge to scream. There was too much at stake, too many hidden truths lurking just beneath the surface.
Ethan placed a hand possessively on Camille’s shoulder. “Let’s focus on Sophia, for her sake.”
I forced myself to nod, but inside, I was screaming in defiance.
Confronting the Truth
After the funeral, I stormed toward Camille, determination driving my every step. My pulse quickened as I approached her. “How did you get that bracelet?”
Her laughter echoed against the chapel walls, mocking and shrill. “Oh, Teresa, you really have no idea, do you? Mariana loved her secrets. She confided in me more than you.”
The way she said it, with such relish, ignited a fire in my belly. “What are you talking about?”
Camille leaned in, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “She hid something. And I know just where to find it.”
My mind raced. What could Mariana have hidden? Was it about Ethan? About the life she never wanted to leave behind?
“You think you can just walk in here and play the grieving widow’s friend? You’re nothing!” I spat, but doubts nipped at my resolve.
“I’m the one who holds the answers now,” she replied, her eyes narrowing. “What a pity you won’t get to search for them—if you even dared.”
Just then, Ethan appeared at the entrance, scanning the room until his gaze landed on me.
“Teresa,” he called, a warning in his tone. “I think it’s time for you to leave.”
The walls felt like they were closing in. “I’m not going anywhere,” I shot back, defiant.
“Yes, you are. For Sophia’s sake,” he insisted, stepping closer, his expression cold and unyielding.
Camille smirked, eyes glittering with triumph. “You’d best take his advice, dear.”
I stared at her, feeling the intensity of the moment. The stakes had never been higher. As Ethan moved to take my arm, I stood my ground—this was just the beginning.
