Awakening in a Sea of Silence
I woke up to the hum of machines and the sterile smell of antiseptic. Blinking against the harsh fluorescent lights, I felt the weight of my body pressed against the thin hospital sheets. My thoughts were murky, a haze of pain and fragmented memories.
A soft voice cut through the confusion. “You had a baby,” the doctor said gently. “She’s safe but needs to stay in the NICU for observation.”
Relief washed over me momentarily, only to be swiftly followed by despair as the gravity of the situation settled in. “What happened?” I croaked, trying to piece together the series of events that led me here.
Your blood pressure was dangerously high,” the doctor continued, her brow furrowed in concern. “You ignored some serious warning signs.”
Ignored. The word struck me cold. I thought about Ethan, how he had dismissed my fears. My heart sank deeper as the void of his absence enveloped me. Where was he? My mind raced with questions. Had he cared enough to even check in?
As the doctor spoke, I couldn’t shake the feeling of being utterly alone. With the NICU and the machines beeping, the hospital felt like a prison. “Can I see her?”
<p“Yes, but only briefly,” the doctor replied, compassion etched on her face.
As I angled my head towards the door, I longed for the comfort of Ethan, for our family to be whole. Instead, there was only emptiness, and I feared that part of me had been abandoned along with him.
“Is my husband on his way?” I asked, keeping my voice steady.
The doctor hesitated. “I can’t say for certain.”
An Unexpected Reunion
Time crawled as I waited for Ethan. Every tick of the clock echoed the desperation gnawing at my insides. I was still trying to come to terms with my medical emergency when the door swung open, revealing him in his tailored suit, looking more irritated than concerned.
<p“Rebecca! What is going on here?” he demanded, glancing around with impatience. “You’ve caused enough drama for one day.”
I winced at his words, the sting of them cutting deeper than I expected. “Ethan, I—”
“I missed my mother’s birthday party because of you,” he interrupted, folding his arms across his chest, a defensive posture that felt like a wall between us.
“I nearly lost our baby!” I exclaimed, a mix of anger and desperation bubbling to the surface.
“The doctors said she’ll be fine,” he waved dismissively. “You always find ways to make everything about you.”
My stomach churned. Was he really dismissing my pain and fear so easily? Against my will, tears pricked the corners of my eyes. The weight of his words landed heavily, crushing any hope I had for his support.
“Ethan, I need you to be here, to care about us,” I pleaded, my voice softening.
“I have a business meeting. I’ll be right back,” he responded, turning toward the door with no hint of concern left behind.
“Seriously?” I murmured, incredulity rising. My heart sank further as I caught the edge of his voice just outside the room.
“Yeah, I had to rush to the hospital. It’s just a drama—she’s fine. But listen, this deal could make us a fortune.”
As I overheard him discussing a business deal, I realized I’d lost him completely and felt utterly isolated.
