When you notice an odd orange or pink hue on your bath towels, the most common culprit is Serratia marcescens, a resilient pink/orange bacterium that loves moist environments. This microbe thrives on damp surfaces such as towels, shower curtains, sink drains, and even toilet bowls. It feeds on residual soap, fabric softener, and any organic film left behind after a wash. Because the bacteria form a biofilm—a thin, protective layer of slime—it can cling stubbornly to the fabric fibers, making the discoloration difficult to remove with ordinary detergent alone.

Understanding why the bacteria appear is the first step toward eliminating them. The biofilm protects the cells from heat and chemicals, so even a warm wash may not be enough. The bacteria multiply quickly when towels stay damp for extended periods, especially in bathrooms with poor ventilation. If you notice a lingering musty smell along with the orange stains, that is a strong indicator that Serratia has established a colony on your towels.

To confirm the presence of this bacterium, look for these signs:

  • Orange or pink patches that do not fade after a regular wash.
  • A faint, sweetish odor that is not typical of clean laundry.
  • Stains that appear more pronounced on darker towels.

Knowing that Serratia marcescens is the problem helps you choose the right treatment, because the standard detergent cycle merely lifts surface dirt and does not penetrate the protective biofilm. The following steps are designed to break down that slime, kill the bacteria, and prevent it from returning.

Wash towels with white vinegar to break down biofilm

The first active step in eradicating the orange stains is a hot-water wash combined with one cup of white vinegar, and notably, no detergent. White vinegar is mildly acidic (about 5% acetic acid), which helps to dissolve the extracellular polymeric substances that make up the biofilm. By disrupting this matrix, the bacteria become exposed and more vulnerable to subsequent cleaning agents.

Here’s how to do it effectively:

  • Load the stained towels into your washing machine, separating them from other laundry to avoid cross‑contamination.
  • Set the machine to the hottest water temperature your towels can safely tolerate—usually 140°F (60°C) for cotton.
  • Add one cup of white vinegar directly to the drum before starting the cycle. Do not add any detergent or fabric softener at this stage.
  • Run a full wash cycle, allowing the vinegar to circulate for the entire wash and rinse phases.

While the machine is running, you may notice a faint vinegar smell; this is normal and will dissipate during the rinse. The hot water works in tandem with the acidity to melt the biofilm, while the mechanical agitation physically scrubs the fibers. After the cycle finishes, you should see the orange patches become lighter or disappear entirely, indicating that the biofilm has been sufficiently broken down.

A common mistake is to combine vinegar with detergent in the same wash. The acid can neutralize the surfactants in detergent, reducing cleaning efficiency. Keeping the vinegar wash separate ensures the biofilm is fully exposed before the next deep‑cleaning step.
