Stunned by the Truth
My heart raced as I stared at Lisa. “Zane has a son?” I managed to utter, the words heavy on my tongue. I felt as though the ground beneath me might split open, swallowing my reality whole.
Lisa’s eyes softened, filled with an emotion I couldn’t place. “Yes, his name is Michael. Zane promised to keep him safe from the complications of our life together.”
“Complications?” I echoed, my voice barely a whisper. Zane had always been the one to navigate our family’s tumultuous waters. It made no sense that he could have a child without telling me.
She nodded, her hair shimmering in the afternoon light. “He didn’t want to burden you. We had a brief but intense relationship before you two got married. When Michael was born, Zane made it clear he would provide for him but remain anonymous.”
As her words sank in, I felt a wave of disbelief crash over me. The life we built, the foundation of our love seemed to crumble. Why had Zane kept this secret? What else had he hidden from me?
“Did he ever mention me?” I asked, my voice strained. She shook her head, glancing away. “No, he wanted to protect you both.”
Each heartbeat felt like a betrayal, echoing in my ears as I processed the fact that my husband had been living a double life. I stumbled out of her house, questions swirling like a tempest in my mind. What kind of life had I truly shared with Zane?
A Meeting with the Unknown
Determined to uncover more, I reached out to Michael. “Can we meet?” I texted, my fingers trembling. After hours of anxiety, he finally replied, agreeing with an air of reluctance.
My stomach knotted as the time approached. What could a teenager possibly know about the man I loved? The café where we agreed to meet buzzed around me, and I could hardly focus.
When Michael walked in, he had Zane’s eyes—dark and stormy. “You’re… my dad’s wife?” he asked, his tone a mix of curiosity and caution.
“I am,” I replied, my heart clenching. “Tell me about him.”
As he spoke, painting a picture of Zane that I hadn’t known, each story felt like a dagger. Zane had taught him how to ride a bike, just like he had with our own children, but this was different. Michael talked about shared secrets, laughter, and a bond I had been completely unaware of.
“He was amazing,” Michael said, his eyes brightening. “He loved sports, and he always made time for me.”
“But he never told me,” I whispered, feeling tears prick at my eyes. “Why did he keep you a secret?”
Michael hesitated, searching for the right words. Finally, he said, “I think he wanted to give you a normal life. I was… complicated.”
Before I could respond, he shifted in his seat, pulling something from his backpack. “I have something from him for you,” he said, his voice dropping. “Something he wanted you to have.”
My breath quickened as he handed me a worn leather journal. Its edges were frayed, and I could feel Zane’s presence in its weight. I opened it, scanning through the pages filled with his familiar handwriting. The words flowed like a river of memories, hopes, and regrets.
Just as I finished reading a passage about love and sacrifice, a specific note caught my eye. I froze, my heart pounding as I read: ‘If you are reading this, it means I am gone and my greatest secret is about to change everything.’
