The Meeting
Jessica sat in the corner of the coffee shop, her fingers tapping nervously against the table. She glanced at the clock; it was almost ten minutes past their scheduled time. Where was he? Did he think she would just wait forever? The waft of freshly brewed coffee mixed with anxiety in the air.
Finally, the door swung open, and Mark strolled in, oozing confidence. He spotted her and a smile flickered across his face, one that used to make her heart flutter.
“Hey, Jess. Sorry I’m late. Crazy morning,” he said, sliding into the seat across from her.
“The traffic must have been terrible,” she replied, her tone flat. “Or maybe the guilt just slowed you down?”
Mark chuckled, but it felt forced. “Look, I—”
“You made your choice, Mark. You can’t just stroll back into my life like nothing happened.”
He leaned forward, his eyes glimmering with an all-too-familiar charm. “I’m not asking for much. Just a chance to talk. I miss what we had.”
She wanted to scoff, but she held her ground instead. “What we had? You mean the life you’ve already thrown away for someone else?”
Before he could respond, her phone buzzed on the table. She glanced at the screen, and her breath hitched. It was a message from Melanie.
“Hey, Jess! Just wanted to let you know that Mark and I are on our honeymoon! Can’t wait to make new memories and put your sad little life behind us. Cheers!”
Mark’s expression shifted, his charm evaporating. “What? She sent you that?”
“Sounds a bit like you’ve been replaced, don’t you think?” she shot back, her heart racing with a mix of anger and vindication. “Maybe you should’ve thought twice before marrying her.”
His mouth opened, but no words came out. Jessica couldn’t help the smirk creeping onto her face, her pulse quickening. For once, the tables had turned.
Documenting the Truth
Later that evening, Jessica sat at her kitchen table, paperwork sprawled around her like a crime scene. Each piece of evidence she collected felt like a weight lifted from her chest. She highlighted every bad financial decision Mark had made, every time he had taken her for granted while she supported him.
“This is it,” she muttered to herself, her pen scratching against the paper. “I’m taking control of my life.”
Just then, her phone rang. It was Carol. Jessica hesitated before answering.
“Jessica!” Carol’s voice was sharp, tinged with urgency. “We need to talk. Family matters are at stake here.”
A flicker of unease stirred in her stomach. “What do you want, Carol?”
“It’s about Mark. He’s planning to contest the divorce, and he thinks he deserves half the house. You need to be prepared.”
The chill that ran down Jessica’s spine felt like ice water. “Is he serious?”
“Oh, he’s serious. He believes he can manipulate everyone, including you.”
“I won’t let that happen,” she declared, her voice steady despite the tremor inside her. “I’m done being manipulated.”
After hanging up, she felt a wave of determination wash over her. She assembled her files, organizing every financial slip, rough text message, and any evidence of his irresponsibility. Then, just as she started to feel empowered, a heavy knock echoed through the house.
Jessica’s heart stuttered in her chest. She opened the door, and there stood Mark, flanked by his mother. The sight sent a rush of adrenaline through her.
“We need to talk, Jessica,” he said, feigning seriousness, but she could see the panic behind his eyes.
“You want to talk about family?” she countered, her tone dripping with ice. “Let’s talk about the real family matters.”
As she opened her mouth to reveal the evidence she had gathered, she realized that there were deeper secrets buried within their family, secrets marked by Mark’s childhood that had shaped him into the man he was today. This wasn’t just about her and him. This was about to get much more complicated.
