When Labor Strikes and Your Husband Chooses His Mother’s Birthday Over You

Part 5: Family Secrets Unveiled

The door creaked open, and Ethan’s mother, Linda, stepped into the room, her elegant presence filling the space. She looked like she belonged at a gala rather than a hospital waiting room.

“I need to see my family,” she said with a cold smile, as if that claim alone could erase the tension.

I could feel my insides twist. “Your son left me alone in labor,” I shot back. “Is that family?”

“Ethan is under a lot of pressure,” she replied, her voice unfaltering. “You have to understand him.”

“Understand him? He abandoned me!” My heart raced, and tears threatened to spill.

Linda’s eyes softened just a fraction. “Ethan has always put up a façade. It’s how he was raised—always the perfect son, always the one to please everyone else.”

“Is that supposed to excuse him?” I demanded, rage and frustration bubbling over. “I’m here alone, recovering from complications, and he’s at a party!”

She crossed her arms, glancing away for a moment before returning her focus to me. “He never learned to express his feelings. I thought he’d grow out of it, but I can see now…”

“See what?” I pressed, feeling emboldened by her confession.

“He’s terrified of being vulnerable. He’ll always choose what looks good on the surface,” she sighed, the weight of her words hanging in the air. “I thought marrying you would change him.”

Her words hung like a shroud, suffocating any remaining hope I had for Ethan’s growth. “So you’re saying he’ll never change?” I whispered, feeling the cold tendrils of doubt slip into my heart.

Linda nodded slowly, her eyes reflecting a blend of sorrow and resignation. “He won’t change unless he wants to. It’s not your responsibility to fix him.”

As I absorbed her words, a new determination ignited within me. “Then I need to put my baby first. I can’t allow this pattern to continue.”

The decision crystallized in my mind. I could break free, start anew—no more living in his shadow.

Part 6: The Shocking Truth

Later that evening, after the rush of emotions had settled, I felt a surge of clarity. I needed to confront Ethan, to put my foot down. I was ready to end this toxic cycle. Just as I was packing a small bag, the door swung open.

Ethan entered, his face a mix of fatigue and annoyance. “What are you doing?” he asked, glancing at the bag stuffed with clothes and essentials.

“I’m leaving, Ethan,” I declared, the weight of my decision firming my resolve. “I can’t raise our child while you’re off living in your own world.”

“Don’t be dramatic, Rebecca,” he scoffed, but I stood my ground.

“Dramatic? You left me alone in labor!” I shot back. “You have to understand the gravity of your actions.”

His eyes hardened, and he tried to divert the conversation. “I’ve got important meetings to attend. You’ll be fine on your own.”

As he turned to grab his phone, something in his pocket caught my eye—a slip of paper, barely sticking out. Curious, I reached over and pulled it out.

“Wait, what is this?” I asked, unfolding the note. My heart raced as I read quickly—figures, percentages, accounts. My hands shook.

Ethan spun around. “Give that back!”

“Is this… is this an account statement?” I asked, dread pooling in my stomach. I glanced back at him, and the panic in his eyes confirmed my fears.

“It’s nothing, just a mistake,” he stammered, but I could hear the tremor in his voice.

“Enough! You’ve been lying to me,” I accused, my voice shaking with disbelief. “This isn’t just an account—it’s a whole set of transactions. You’re embezzling money!”

His silence was more telling than any defense could be.

I staggered back, each word slicing deeper. “You’ve been stealing from your company? To fund what? Your lavish lifestyle?”

His face shifted from irritation to agitation. “I can explain!”

“Explain what?” I interrupted, feeling bile rise in my throat. “You’re jeopardizing our future, Ethan! Do you even care?”

“I was doing it for us!” he hissed, fists clenching. “For a better life!”

That final revelation, the shocking truth unraveling before me, left me reeling. I never realized how deep his deceit ran, and as the reality set in, I realized I was not just free from him—I was ensnared in an entirely new web of lies.

I took a shaky breath, fighting against the hurt swelling inside. “I thought I was leaving you for my baby’s sake, but now I need to think about my safety first. What else have you been hiding?”

Ethan opened his mouth, but no words came out. In that silence, my world began to crumble.
