Confrontation
I bolted from Ethan’s apartment, my heart pounding in my ears. “Diane, how could you?” I muttered under my breath, each word coated in desperation. The truth she had hidden felt like a jagged knife, twisting in my gut as I raced to her place.
The door swung open, but the apartment was dark and silent. I flipped on the light, scanning every corner. “Diane!” I screamed, my voice echoing against the bare walls. No response. Just emptiness.
On the kitchen counter, a single note lay in stark contrast to the chaos swirling in my mind. I picked it up, my hands trembling.
“I’m sorry, I had to leave.”
The words blurred as tears filled my eyes. The implications crashed over me like a tidal wave. Where had she gone? What had she gotten herself into?
I felt my pulse quicken. Anxiety clawed at my throat. Was she in danger? Did she know something about Paul’s death that I didn’t? I crumpled the note in my fist as panic gripped me. I needed answers, and I needed them fast.
Desperate Search
I raced to the car, each turn of the wheel fueled by dread. I wasn’t thinking straight, but I couldn’t stop. I needed to talk to Paul’s friends—anyone who might know what happened that night on the water.
The familiar faces came flooding back to me as I drove through the old neighborhood. Flashes of laughter at barbecues and fishing trips mixed with the recent memory of my husband’s gaping absence. A knot formed in my stomach.
At Gary’s house, he looked shocked to see me, his words stumbling out with reluctance. “I thought you were… You know.”
“I need to know what happened that night,” I interrupted, urgency spilling from me. “Please, just tell me.”
He hesitated, glancing over his shoulder before leaning closer. “Paul… he was involved in some things, things he never told you about. There was an argument that night. I heard it.”
My heart sank with each confession. “What did they argue about?”
Gary inhaled sharply, his eyes darting away. “It was about money. And people. Dangerous people.”
“What do you mean?” I pressed, feeling sick as the pieces began to slide into place.
“He was keeping some bad company. I tried to warn him, but he wouldn’t listen.”
As I absorbed his words, dread clawed at me, nearly paralyzing. “So you think he…?”
Gary nodded, his face grave. “Yeah. It could explain why he hasn’t been found.”
I stumbled back into my car, reeling from the weight of his revelation. My mind raced with thoughts of Diane and the ties that bound her to this unfolding tragedy.
Just as I reached for my phone, it buzzed violently against the dashboard. The screen flashed Diane’s name.
“You should have left it alone.”
My heart dropped as I read the message twice, its implications forming a dark cloud around me. What had I stumbled into? I drove to Diane’s apartment again, desperation clawing at my throat.
Inside her empty apartment, I caught a flicker of movement in the corner of my eye. A scrap of paper peeking under the sofa caught my attention. I knelt down, pulling it free.
My hands trembled as I unfolded it, revealing documents that hinted at a web of connections. Names I didn’t recognize, figures that made no sense, but one stood out: Paul’s old employer—linked to a known criminal organization.
The realization slammed into me like a freight train. Was it possible he had orchestrated his own disappearance? I felt the ground beneath me shatter, leaving me teetering on the edge of a horrifying truth.
