Gathering Tension
A completely different story. The air in the lawyer’s office felt thick, each breath heavy with unspoken words. Lisa’s fingers drummed nervously against her thigh while Mark sat across from her, equally tense, his brow furrowed as he couldn’t shake the impending dread. “What do you think she was thinking?” Lisa whispered, barely able to meet her brother’s gaze.
Mark shrugged, his voice low. “I don’t know. Maybe she finally got tired of us.” His words hung in the air, a bitter reminder of their family’s fractured dynamics. Family gatherings had once been filled with laughter, but now they felt more like rehearsals for awkward conversations. They remembered the Thanksgiving dinners when their grandmother would play peacemaker, her eyes twinkling as she tried to mend the rifts that time had only deepened.
“Remember last Christmas?” Lisa said, a faint smile breaking through her worry. “She made that ridiculous sweater for you.” A short laugh escaped her lips before it withered, the reality pressing back in. “But I can’t help but think… what if she was planning something different?”
Mark leaned forward, staring at the polished table. “We all know she was unpredictable. Maybe this will is just another one of her games.” His skepticism mirrored Lisa’s own turmoil, their shared childhood memories mingling with the uncertainty of their grandmother’s intentions. The clock ticked loudly, each second amplifying the silence that enveloped the room.
The Will is Read
As the lawyer cleared his throat, the sound cut through the tension. “Thank you all for coming today. Today, we will be discussing the last will and testament of Helen Mitchell.” He shuffled some papers, glancing up with an unreadable expression. “I understand there may be some surprises.”
Lisa swallowed hard. “Surprises? What does that even mean?” Mark shifted in his seat, an eyebrow raised as he tried to read the lawyer’s body language.
The lawyer began to read, his voice steady. “To my beloved family, I leave my entire estate to my dear friend Clara.” The words struck like a bolt of lightning. “Clara? Who’s Clara?” Lisa’s voice rose, heat flooding her face as disbelief coursed through her veins. “This can’t be right!”
“It has to be a mistake,” Mark added, panic creeping into his voice. “There’s no one named Clara in our family.” Lisa’s mind raced. Family friend? A hidden betrayal? Anger flared up within her, building a wall between her and the uncertainty. “Did she even know this woman?”
The lawyer continued reading, but her thoughts were a whirlwind of confusion and betrayal. “This doesn’t make any sense!” she exclaimed, slamming her palm on the table. “She wouldn’t just leave everything to a stranger!”
Just then, the lawyer’s voice cut through her thoughts as he began to explain Clara’s connection to Grandmother. “Clara is actually—”
Just as the lawyer reads Clara’s connection to Grandmother, the door swings open, and a woman who looks strikingly like Grandmother walks in.
