Shadows of the Past
The week dragged on, but it felt like we were running in circles — conversations were stilted, laughter forced. Leo seemed stretched thin, grappling with the weight of that letter. I tried to keep our routine normal, our evenings filled with simple dinners and old TV shows. But Goldi’s specter lingered, coloring everything with shades of gray.
One night, as I stood washing the dishes, I felt Leo’s presence behind me. “Dad, did you ever love her?”
I nearly dropped a plate. The question hung in the air. “I thought I did.”
He pressed on, the shadows of Goldi’s letter looming. “You thought? Or you did?”
Anger flared up. “Love is complicated, Leo. It’s not a straight line.”
“But it felt… real, didn’t it?” he challenged. “How did you let her go?”
My thoughts spiraled. I didn’t want to revisit those years, the less tangible memories of the woman who had once promised forever. I had built a life on her absence, anchoring my heart to a fragile hope that someday, the pain would fade.
“She thought you would be better off without her,” Leo said, echoing the letter.
“Maybe she was right,” I muttered, but instantly regretted the words. How could I say something so hurtful? I turned around to see Leo’s expression — a hurt little boy underneath the façade of adulthood.
“But I needed her. I needed both of you.”
I found my breath. A knot twisted in my gut. “You’re enough for me,” I said, but it felt inadequate. “You always have been.”
As the night wore on, I kept replaying the memories: Goldi’s bright laugh, the way she’d dance in the kitchen, the warmth of her hand in mine. Yet I also remembered the distance that had grown, the tension that boiled over the edges of our lives. Was I to blame for her departure? Did I push her away?
Sleep evaded me that night, questions chasing me into restless dreams, each echoing footstep another reminder of her absence.
Truths in Unfurling
The letter had become an unbearable weight, both of us trying to find meaning in a jumble of emotions. I imagined myself marching into Goldi’s world, questions spilling forth like a flood. Yet, the truth was — I didn’t know if I wanted to hear them. A part of me was relieved by her absence. The other part felt betrayed by her letter. Did she really think she could explain away eighteen years of silence?
Leo took to wandering, seeking solace in weekend activities with his friends while I spent evenings, haunted, staring at old photographs — us together, smiles frozen in time. I’d never expected this. I’d always thought the chapter of Goldi’s exit was closed. That was our story, a one-act play with no curtain call. Yet here we were, flipping pages.
One Saturday, as I strolled past the local park, I saw mothers with their children, laughter spilling into the air. I spotted a woman who bore an uncanny resemblance to Goldi. My heart stopped. The same smile, the same way she tilted her head at an awkward joke. I blinked hard, willing the phantom away.
But it left a lingering thought — what if she was out there? What if she was just waiting? And for what? A moment to reveal herself? I gripped the letter tightly, the words echoing in my mind. Something deeper had been kept hidden, and the thought made me uneasy.
On the way home, Leo called me, his voice quivering. “Dad, can you meet me at the café? I have something to show you.”
“Something about the letter?”
He didn’t answer directly, leaving me with a thin silence that felt more of a question than assurance.
I arrived at the café and scanned the room, my heart pounding. I spotted him at a corner table, his face pale. “What is it?” I asked, sinking into the seat across from him.
“I found something — another letter.”
My stomach lurched. “What do you mean? Where?”
“In the attic. It was stuck behind some boxes. It’s from the same week as the first.”
I felt the world tilt. “And?”
“I think it has more answers.”
“What if it changes everything?”
He paused, his gaze steady on mine. “What if it does?”
Leo opened a worn envelope. My heart raced as he began to read aloud. Each word felt like a heavy stone added to the pile of uncertainty that was shifting beneath us. This was it. The moment that could lead to a reckoning.
