Ben’s Revelation and My Growing Dread
My hands trembled as I gripped the letter from Rosie. Every word etched into my mind felt like a dagger piercing through my heart. She expressed fears that echoed my deepest anxieties about her becoming a mother.
What if those genetic complications were more severe than we’d ever understood? What if raising twins could stretch her beyond what she could endure? I felt the weight of her choices bearing down on me, an anchor dragging me into uncertainty.
“I can’t believe this,” I whispered, more to myself than to anyone else.
Just then, I caught snippets of a conversation from the nurses’ station nearby, their voices urgent and tense. “We can’t ignore the family history,” one doctor said, his tone clipped. “The risks are too high.”
“If there’s a cardiac issue—” another chimed in, their words fading as my heart raced. I couldn’t help but wonder if they were talking about Rosie, if they were discussing the very fate of the twins. My chest tightened with every syllable. Had Rosie knowingly put her children at risk all this time?
Was Ben aware? Did he hide this from me? His promise to protect her secret weighed heavy on my heart as I wrestled with the images of an uncertain future. What were we in for?
The Frantic Commotion from the OR
Ben returned, his face pale, his eyes haunted. I could see the tremor in his hands as he approached. “It’s not good,” he said, his voice barely a whisper.
“What do you mean? What happened?” I felt the blood drain from my face.
“Rosie… she’s gone into cardiac arrest,” he confessed, the words spilling out like a dam breaking. “I promised her I’d always protect her secret.”
“What secret?” I demanded, desperation creeping into my tone. Every moment felt like an eternity as I searched his eyes for answers, but only fear stared back at me.
“Before the wedding, we agreed—I wouldn’t tell anyone without her permission. But now—” His voice cracked, and I could see the frustration build. “I never imagined it would come to this.”
I stood frozen, piecing together the implications of his confession. What could be so devastating that he’d keep it hidden even now?
Just as I began to comprehend the depth of our situation, a frantic commotion erupted from the operating room. My stomach dropped. I knew something terrible had happened.
