Section 5
The hospital smelled sterile, a mix of antiseptic and fear. I paced the waiting room, listening to the muffled sounds of machines beeping beyond the closed door. Emma was inside, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was very wrong.
The doctor emerged, his expression grave. “We need to run tests. We suspect she has ingested something toxic.” My heart dropped. “What do you mean, toxic?”
“It could lead to serious complications,” he said, his voice steady yet filled with urgency.
Trevor was beside me, his face ashen. “You think…?” His voice trailed off. I could see the gears turning in his mind, the conflict rising in his chest. “We need to know what she ingested,” I pressed him.
But all I got was silence as Trevor stared at the floor. The weight of the recent revelations hung heavily between us. How could his mother have done this? I had to confront him. “Trevor, do you honestly believe your mother is innocent?”
His eyes flickered to mine, a storm of emotions raging behind them. “I don’t know, okay? My mother—”
“Your mother what? Was just misunderstood? Do you really think she’s capable of this?”
The tension in the air crackled. I could feel a decision looming between us, one that would change everything. “If Emma dies because of this, I can’t—”
But he cut me off, swallowing hard. “We’re not there yet. I have to believe she wouldn’t do that.”

Emma was finally recovering, though her face was pale and drawn. I had stayed by her bedside, desperate for her to bounce back. As she shifted under the sterile sheets, something caught my eye. Crayons scattered on the bedside table.
<p“I drew a picture, Mommy,” she said weakly, her tiny voice breaking. My heart raced as she pushed it toward me. I glanced down, and my breath caught in my throat.
There it was: a chaotic scribble depicting her grandmother, a sinister smile on her face, mixing the very powder I had feared.
“Emma… is this Grandma?” I asked, panic rising in my throat. She nodded, tears pooling in her eyes. “She told me it was a secret. That I couldn’t tell you.”
My hands trembled as I clutched the drawing. This was the evidence I needed. I stormed out of the room, searching for Trevor, fueled by adrenaline and fear.
<p“Trevor!” I shouted, finding him in the corridor. He looked up, confusion etched into his features. “Look at this!” I thrust Emma's drawing at him.
His eyes widened as comprehension dawned. “Where did she get this? It can’t be real!”
“It is real! She saw her mixing the powder!” The gravity of the moment was crushing. “Is this why you’ve defended her, Trevor? You knew!”
He hesitated, guilt churning behind his eyes. “I wanted to protect you—that’s why I didn’t tell you what I found.”
“What did you find? What are you hiding?”
His hands shook, his voice barely a whisper. “I found messages, proof of her previous manipulations. I thought she was different with Emma.”
“Different?” My voice rose, raw and broken. “She has put our children in danger! You chose to protect her instead of your own kids!”
As the confession hung heavy in the air, I felt as if the ground had shifted beneath me. Trevor’s loyalty had been misplaced—dark secrets wrapped in family loyalty had twisted our reality. How had we come to this?
