Unraveling Secrets
I couldn’t shake the feeling that my world was crumbling. The funeral had felt like a fog—emotions thick and suffocating, but now clarity was creeping in.
“Mr. Harris,” I said, stepping into his office, the scent of polished wood and old leather filling the air. “What did my father really want for me?”
He looked up, his expression unreadable. “Natalie, your father had some changes in mind before he passed.”
“Changes?” I echoed, my heart racing. “What kind of changes?”
“He was in the process of drafting a new will,” Mr. Harris replied, his voice low and measured. “It included significant provisions for someone named ‘Rebecca.’”
The name hit me like a punch. “Rebecca? The woman in my dress? What connection did she have with my father?”
“It’s more complicated than you know,” he said, shifting in his chair.
My pulse quickened. “What do you mean?”
Mr. Harris hesitated, then motioned for me to sit. “Your father trusted her. She was advising him about the business at a time when he felt uncertain about the future.”
“Advising him? About what?” I pressed, my mind swirling with images of Rebecca in that dress, my husband’s hand in hers.
“Your father believed she had insights that could save the family legacy,” he explained, his tone grave.
“And I was just supposed to accept that?” I felt betrayal seep into every word.
“Natalie, you need to understand. Your father had the best intentions, but…he had doubts.”
“Doubts about what? About me?” The reality twisted a knife in my gut.
“He wanted to leave you a letter to explain everything.”
A letter? It felt like a lifeline in a storm. “Where is it?”
As I left his office, my mind raced with possibilities. I needed to find that letter—if it existed.
But as I stepped into the stark hallway, I overheard muffled voices from the conference room at the back. My body froze.
“You know what he wanted, Grant,” Rebecca’s voice was sharp, almost pleading. “You can’t let her find out.”
“I’m working on it,” Grant replied, his tone low, filled with urgency. “We can handle this, but you need to trust me.”
The weight of their words crashed over me. What conspiracy was brewing between them? I leaned closer, heart pounding, desperate to hear more.
Confrontation and Revelation
I pushed the door open, adrenaline coursing through my veins. “What the hell is going on?”
Both of them turned, the surprise on their faces quickly morphing into guilt. Grant shifted his weight, while Rebecca straightened, her posture defensive.
“Natalie, it’s not what it looks like,” Grant stammered, running a hand through his hair.
I could feel the fire burning behind my eyes. “Then what is it? Because I just heard you two plotting behind my back. What does my father’s will have to do with this?”
Rebecca exchanged a quick glance with Grant, then stepped forward. “It’s complicated, Natalie.”
“Complicated how?” I demanded. “You already wore my dress to my father’s funeral. What else could possibly be more complicated?”
“Your father wanted to ensure the business would be in safe hands, and that’s why—”
“That’s why what?” I interrupted. “That’s why he thought you were a better choice than me?”
“No! That’s not what I meant!” she exclaimed, her voice rising. “He valued my input on the market trends.”
“Input?” I laughed, the sound bitter. “Or was it another kind of input he valued?”
Grant stepped between us, his expression pleading. “Natalie, listen. There’s a lot you don’t understand.”
“Then explain it,” I challenged. “Or I walk.”
But before he could respond, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I glanced down to see a message from Mr. Harris: “Important. Meet me ASAP.”
The urgency in his words sent a new wave of determination through me. “I need answers, and I need them now.”
As I turned to leave, I caught one final glimpse of their faces—two conspirators caught in a web of deceit, and I was the one left in the dark.
