New Beginnings
Toronto buzzed with life as Claire and Noah settled into their new apartment. The air smelled of fresh pastries and coffee. It was a stark contrast to the heaviness she had left behind.
Noah was already making friends at the playground, laughter mingling with the music of the city. Claire felt an exhilarating sense of independence as she watched him swing higher and higher. “Look at me, Mom!” he called, his joy contagious.
She had started to explore local cafes, each one more welcoming than the last. The barista at her favorite spot, a woman with bright blue hair, even remembered her order. “Coming right up, Claire!”
But a gnawing unease began to creep in. It started with a text—just yesterday, her phone chimed with a number she didn’t recognize. “I see you.” Claire’s heart raced. Her first instinct was to dismiss it as a prank, yet it felt too precise, too calculated.
As she walked the streets, she noticed eyes on her, the shadows flickering just beyond her vision. Was someone watching her? Had Jason sent someone after her? The hairs on her neck prickled with anxiety.
Then came the moment that sent a chill down her spine. Claire entered a local cafe, her go-to spot, and froze. Madison sat there, her eyes darting across the room, but then locking onto Claire’s. Time halted.
For a second, Claire was paralyzed. The woman who had shattered her world was close enough to touch. Madison looked just as surprised, but there was no fear in her eyes—only a predatory glint.
“What are you doing here?” Claire whispered under her breath, her heart thundering. She forced herself to turn away, gripping Noah’s hand tightly. The encounter left a bitter taste in her mouth.
Planning for Safety
Later that evening, Claire paced the living room, her mind racing. The meeting with Rebecca couldn’t come soon enough. Anxiety gnawed at her as she settled onto the couch, Noah drawing pictures on the floor. “Mom, look!” he exclaimed, oblivious to her turmoil.
When Rebecca arrived, her presence was a welcome anchor. “We need to talk,” Claire said, her voice trembling. “I’m starting to feel… watched.”
Rebecca’s brow furrowed. “We’ll take care of it. Trust me.” They sat together at the small dining table, the remnants of dinner pushed aside. Claire shared all the odd texts, Madison’s unexpected appearance, and the creeping sensation that she was being followed.
“We have to secure your safety,” Rebecca said, her tone hardening. “Changing your phone numbers is a must, and we should avoid social media completely.”
“What if it’s not enough?” Claire asked, her heart pounding. “What if Jason finds us?”
“We’ll make a plan. You have to stay one step ahead,” Rebecca assured her. Claire nodded, feeling slightly bolstered.
Just as she was starting to regain a flicker of control over her life, another fear struck her. The evening quieted down, Noah had gone to bed, and Claire went to grab a glass of water. That’s when she saw it: a white envelope slipped under the door, stark against the wood.
With trembling hands, she picked it up. The words inside were clear and chilling: “You can’t run forever.”
Her breath caught in her throat, the walls felt like they were closing in. How could this be? The semblance of safety shattered as fear wrapped around her like a cold, dark blanket.
