As the Wedding Day Approaches
The days leading to the wedding felt like a whirlwind. I wanted to focus on the love I shared with Ethan, but every interaction with Diane twisted my stomach into knots.
“Such a lovely choice of dress, dear,” she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “It’s so… interesting how you’re embracing your unique style.”
“Interesting?” I murmured to myself, staring into the mirror, the reflection a mix of hope and anxiety.
Every fitting, every meeting, brought another comment that dug at me like splinters. “You’re sure you want short hair for the wedding? It’s the most important day of your life,” she quipped one evening, while I was busy adjusting my veil.
I took a deep breath, reminding myself that I had a team of friends who believed in me. “Let’s just make this day beautiful,” I told them, forcing a smile.
But beneath the surface, I feared disaster. What if she derailed everything? The worst-case scenarios raced through my mind like a storm, but I pushed them aside. “Love conquers all,” I repeated, clinging to the mantra.
On our last day before the wedding, I found solace in the sun warming my skin as I practiced my vows in the garden. “I can do this,” I whispered, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something sinister loomed just out of sight.
The Wedding Ceremony
The day arrived, and everything felt almost magical. The decor sparkled under the afternoon sun, and my heart overflowed as Ethan gazed at me with love in his eyes.
As the officiant spoke, I couldn’t help but feel that everything was finally falling into place. “You may kiss the bride,” he said, and I leaned in, ready to lose myself in that moment.
Just then, a voice cut through the air like a knife. “STOP!”
My heart plummeted as I turned to see Diane charging forward, her expression a grimace of determination. Before I could utter a word, she yanked at my wig, the sudden pull sending me reeling.
A gasp echoed around the room. My bare scalp glistened, exposed to everyone I had hoped would celebrate my joy.
“She lied to my son!” Diane shouted, holding my wig aloft as if it was a trophy. The shock in the room was palpable, all eyes darting between me and her.
Time stopped. I stood frozen, humiliation flooding through me, while Ethan’s face twisted in horror.
“What are you doing?” he cried, stepping toward me, his focus shifting between his mother and me. “This isn’t who you are!”
“I’m just pointing out the truth,” Diane spat, her voice cold and unyielding as the silence thickened. I could feel the weight of her accusations, but behind me, I sensed movement.
Guests began to murmur, rallying around me. I felt a surge of empowerment coursing through me, sparking a fierce defiance. Suddenly, I was not just a victim; I was a woman standing for her truth.
“You don’t know anything about me!” I shouted, daring to meet the gazes of those around me. “You don’t understand our love!”
But in that powerful moment of defiance, my gaze flickered to Ethan’s phone as it buzzed on the table. My heart dropped when I saw Diane’s name flash across the screen. It was a text.
My breath quickened as a sickening realization swept over me—had she been manipulating him this whole time?
