Chapter 3: Confrontation in the Chaos
“You did this on purpose!” Paige shouted, her voice slicing through the tension like a knife. The chapel doors swung closed behind her, cutting off the murmur of shocked guests.
“What are you talking about?” I replied, my heart pounding in my chest. The weight of the moment still hung in the air, but now all eyes were on us.
“You think I wouldn’t recognize your little game?” She threw her hands up in exasperation. “Making me the villain in front of everyone.”
I shook my head, desperate to reach her. “Paige, I wanted you to know how much Mom loved you. This isn’t about you or me; it’s about healing.”
Her expression hardened. “Healing? You really think this was about healing? You humiliated me in front of our family!”
“That wasn’t my intention!” I felt tears prick my eyes, a mix of sadness and frustration. “I wanted you to see that you were never in shadow. Mom loved us both, and she was proud of who we both could be!”
Paige scoffed, her voice thick with bitterness. “This was just another chance for you to shine, wasn’t it? To twist the knife one last time.”
As she turned away, a scream echoed from the parking lot, piercing through our argument. A woman’s voice, frantic and filled with terror. “Help! Somebody, help!”
“What was that?” I whispered, both of us frozen in place. Then our instincts kicked in, and we rushed towards the sound.
Chapter 4: A Life in Peril
The parking lot was a scene of chaos. I spotted our aunt collapsed on the ground, her face twisted in pain, clutching her chest. Panic surged through me as I rushed to her side.
“Aunt Julia! What happened?” I knelt next to her, trying to assess the situation as I cradled her head in my lap.
Paige stood to the side, her eyes wide, panic etched on her face. “Call 911!” she shouted, her voice breaking. I fumbled for my phone, hands shaking.
Panic clawed at me; I could feel it in my throat. The argument with Paige felt miles away now. “Stay with us, please, Aunt Julia,” I urged, my voice trembling.
“I—can’t… breathe…” Aunt Julia gasped, her eyes rolling back just a bit. I pressed my palm against her chest, trying to steady her heartbeat with my own.
“Help is coming,” I reassured her, though doubt gnawed at me. What if it was too late? What if I couldn’t save her? My thoughts raced. What would happen to our family if we lost her?
Paige moved closer, her hands trembling. “I can’t believe this is happening,” she murmured, her previous anger melting away into concern.
As the sound of sirens grew louder, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was shifting between us. Then Paige turned to me, her eyes wide with fear. “What if this is all your fault?”
