Chapter 5
As I cleaned up after my father, I caught sight of the old military trunk tucked away in the corner of the room. Dust clung to its surface like a memory refusing to fade.
With trembling hands, I approached it. The rusted latch protested as I pried it open. Inside, I found uniforms layered over a stack of documents. A chill ran down my spine as I picked up a manila envelope labeled with a name I recognized.
“No… it can’t be,” I whispered, pulling papers into the light. They were filled with codes, names of covert operations, and a map marked with mysterious locations I had never seen before. My heart raced.
“Dad, what have you done?” I muttered under my breath, piecing together the hints from Mason’s friends, the hushed tones, the fear. This wasn’t just part of his service; it was something darker.
“You need to stop digging, Harper,” a voice in my head urged.
I glanced out the window, my breath hitching. The streetlight beneath my father’s window flickered ominously. Then I saw it—a figure standing just beyond the glow, a shadow watching. I froze, my blood running cold.
“Who’s there?” I croaked, my voice barely a whisper. The figure turned and slipped away into the darkness.
Chapter 6
“Mason, we need to talk,” I said, urgency thrumming in my veins as I confronted him in the parking lot. I pulled out the papers, the map crumpling in my grip. “What’s all this about?”
His expression shifted, the bravado fading into something colder. “You don’t need to get involved with this,” he said, a hint of desperation creeping into his voice.
“Desperate to protect your dad?” I shot back, my heart pounding. “Or desperate to keep me from the truth?”
“You think you know everything, don’t you?” Mason snapped, eyes narrowing.
I felt the air thicken between us, each accusation sharp as glass. “You always treated me like a child, Mason. But I’m not. I can handle the truth, whatever it is!”
For a moment, silence stretched taut, his face a mask of uncertainty. Then he stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Harper, you don’t understand what you’re getting into. This isn’t just about Dad.”
“And what is it about? Keeping secrets? Protecting the family name?” I pressed, anger boiling in me. “What did I find that you’re so afraid of?”
He hesitated, and in that moment, clarity struck me. “You knew all along, didn’t you? You were the one who wanted me to stay away from the truth. All those times you dismissed my questions!”
“Because I love you,” he replied, voice strained, “and I wanted to keep you safe.”
“Safe from what?” I demanded, my throat dry. “Safe from knowing that Dad might be involved in—”
“It’s not what you think!” he interrupted, a fierceness igniting in his eyes. “He’s innocent! I swear!”
“Innocent?” I laughed bitterly. “You’ve been lying to me, protecting a lie. Mason, it doesn’t add up. The text I received, it wasn’t sent by you, was it?”
His expression faltered, and my heart dropped. The realization sank in like lead. “You’re not just protecting him. You’re part of this cover-up, aren’t you?”
“You need to stop!” he raised his voice, desperation cracking through.
Every interaction replayed in my mind—his evasiveness, the way he always changed the subject. The protective older brother had been controlling, not caring if I found out. It shattered me.
The truth intertwined with betrayal, leaving me gasping. “You’re not who I thought you were, Mason.”
The night grew colder as the weight of the revelation settled over me. I felt exposed and vulnerable, my future uncertain. All that remained was the deafening echo of my realization: Mason had been manipulating me all along.
