As the Phone Call Shatters My World
The hospital smells like antiseptic and fear as I rush through the automatic doors. My heart pounds, the panic bubbling up from my stomach. “Lily!” I call, half hoping to see her face light up at my voice.
But the nurse stops me. “Sir, you can’t go in there yet.”
“What’s wrong with her?” I demand, my voice rising.
“She’s stable, but we’re monitoring her mental state,” she says, her eyes avoiding mine, a sure sign that I should be worried.
“Mental state?” I echo, the heat spilling into my cheeks. “Why? What happened?”
Before she can answer, I’m ushered into the waiting area. I collapse into a chair, my mind racing. Thoughts of Emily swirl like a storm. Had Lily been visiting the grave? My heart sinks as guilt fills the spaces between my breaths. How could I have let this happen?
Minutes stretch into eternity before a doctor approaches. “Lily has some minor injuries, but her emotional health concerns us,” he explains. “She’s been showing signs of depression. Have you noticed any changes?”
“Not really,” I stammer, though I know it’s a lie. “She’s just been… quiet.”
“It’s common for children to express grief in unexpected ways. We found notes in her belongings.”
A cold shiver runs down my spine. Notes? What notes?
“You should talk to her. She might need more support than you realize,” the doctor adds, and the weight of his words crushes me.
I nod numbly but inside, I’m screaming. I’ve been so wrapped up in my own grief, I failed to see how much my daughter needed me. How many times had Lily visited her mother’s grave? My heart races again, this time with urgency. I need to get to her.
Finding the Hidden Truths at the Grave
The sky is overcast as I return to the cemetery, Lily by my side, a shadow of the bright girl she used to be. “I thought we could talk to your mom,” I say, my voice barely above a whisper.
Lily nods, but her eyes are cast down. “Do we have to?”
“It might help,” I suggest, forcing hope into my voice.
As we reach Emily’s grave, something catches my eye—a small weathered box nestled against the headstone. My breath catches in my throat. “What’s this?” I ask, kneeling to pick it up.
Lily shifts uncomfortably, her gaze darting around. “I don’t know.”
With trembling hands, I open the box. Inside, neatly stacked letters, all addressed to Emily in Lily’s careful handwriting. I feel tears prick my eyes. “These are from you?”
“I… I just wanted to talk to her,” she mumbles, her voice cracking.
Carefully, I pick up a letter and begin to read. My heart breaks as each word pulls me deeper into Lily’s pain. “Dear Mom, I miss you so much. Sometimes I feel like you abandoned me.”
“Lily, I—” I start, but my voice falters as I continue reading.
“I wish you could still tell me stories and help me with my homework. I pretend you’re sitting here with me, but I know it isn’t real.”
Each letter reveals a depth of grief I was completely unaware of. A sense of betrayal washes over me. How could she carry this alone?
“Lily…” I whisper, but my voice is lost in her silence.
I pull out another letter, my trembling fingers brushing against the paper. “Dear Mom, I feel like everyone is forgetting you, and it hurts so much.” A pang of guilt slices through me. I had no idea how deeply she felt abandoned.
As the last letter reveals Lily’s raw confession of feeling replaced and overwhelmed, I am struck speechless. “I never knew,” I finally manage to say, looking into her wide, tear-filled eyes.
