I Was in Labor Alone While My Husband Celebrated His Mother’s Birthday, and Then Everything Changed in an Instant

Section 3

The world around me swirled as the surgery began, lights blinding and voices fading into a dull roar. I felt the pressure of my body being manipulated, a jarring reminder of the fragility of this moment. The anesthesiologist’s reassuring tone was drowned out by my pounding heart.

“We’re going to need to monitor her closely,” I heard one doctor say. Their uneasy whispers clawed at my stomach, twisting it into knots. What did they mean? Was I in worse shape than I realized? My thoughts spiraled to my baby, alone and at risk.

“Please, I need to know my baby is okay,” I gasped, my voice barely audible. But the faces above me remained focused, their expressions grim. Panic began to claw its way up my throat, and I shut my eyes tightly, willing myself to breathe.

Then, a sound broke through the noise—a faint, piercing cry. My heart leaped, a rush of exhilaration flooding my senses. I strained to hear more, praying it was my child. “It’s a boy,” a nurse announced triumphantly. I wanted to scream, to laugh, to cry all at once, but then darkness edged in again, and I felt myself dipping further into the abyss.

“Stay with us, Rebecca,” a voice echoed as I faded, a foreboding weight crashing down on me. My fleeting joy turned to worry as everything slipped away.

When I opened my eyes again, the sterile room flooded with light and the persistent beeping of machines. Disorientation washed over me like a cold wave. I turned my head as much as I could, searching for someone familiar. Moments later, Alex entered, his brow furrowed deeply.

“Hey, you gave us a scare,” he said, rushing to my side. His worried expression twisted my heart. “I heard you were in rough shape.”

I could only nod, my throat parched. “Where’s Ethan?” I asked, a knot tightening in my chest. I needed him here, needed to feel that everything would be alright.

Alex hesitated, the silence stretching painfully between us. “He… he was seen at a bar after the birthday party.”

My stomach plummeted. “What? He left me to celebrate while I was here?” I struggled to comprehend the utter recklessness of it all. My heart raced again, but this time with anger and betrayal. “How could he do this?”

“I thought you should know,” Alex said softly, concern etched in his features. The revelation felt like a slap. I thought of the baby in the nursery, of how alone I had felt during the surgery, and the realization cut deeper than the physical pain.

Just as I began to gather my thoughts, a nurse entered with a clipboard. “Rebecca, we need to discuss your ongoing care,” she said, her voice steady but urgent. “There’s been a complication, and we must act quickly.”

My mind raced. I looked back at Alex, who was frowning, concern mixing with the anxiety in my chest. The room felt claustrophobic, the walls closing in as I imagined Ethan’s careless laughter ringing in my ears.

“I need to confront him about this,” I said, my voice gaining strength. I thought of how he had dismissed me. I needed him to understand the gravity of his absence.

As if on cue, my phone buzzed on the bedside table, and I didn’t hesitate. I dialed Ethan’s number, feeling the weight of expectation on my shoulders. He answered on the first ring.

“Rebecca?” His voice was thick, almost slurred. “You okay?”

“I’m fine, but where are you?” I asked, forcing calm into my voice. “Do you know what happened?”

He hesitated, and in that moment, I sensed something wasn’t right. Just as the words were about to tumble out of my mouth, a second call came through. Ethan glanced at his phone and his expression changed. Fear crossed his face, and the facade he had constructed crumbled.

“I have to take this,” he said, panic lacing his tone, and I knew—whatever he had been hiding was about to unravel.
