Desperation and Discovery
Morning light spilled through the kitchen window as I scribbled down plans for our outing. “A walk in the park, Mom,” I whispered to myself, imagining her face lighting up. She needed this; she needed me.
Heart racing, I tiptoed upstairs, excitement fluttering in my chest. “Mom?” I called gently, pushing open her door. My breath caught. The room was empty. The window was wide open, curtains flapping like distressed flags. Panic shot through me.
“Mom!” I shouted, dashing back down the stairs, my pulse hammering in my ears. My mind raced through every possible scenario. Where could she have gone?
As I burst into the living room, I froze. Julian and Chloe were lounging on the couch, my mother seated between them. She looked smaller and more terrified than ever, her eyes darting between them and me.
“What did you do?” I yelled, feeling rage and worry twist inside me. Julian stood, blocking my path.
“Relax. We’re just having a family chat,” he said, feigning innocence, but the tension in the room was palpable.
Caught in Their Web
“Family chat?” I scoffed, stepping closer. “This isn’t a family conversation; it’s a hostage situation!”
Chloe’s smirk twisted my stomach. “Oh, sweet sister, you really don’t know, do you?”
“What does that mean?” I demanded, my voice trembling.
She leaned back, crossing her arms. “We’ve got a little backup plan, in case you decided to play the hero.”
Julian’s expression hardened, his eyes narrowing. “You’re out of your depth. Mom’s going to be—”
“Declared incompetent,” Chloe finished, her voice dripping with disdain. “It’s already in motion. We’ve already sold her new will to a lawyer who’s on our side.”
The words hit me like a physical blow. “What?” I gasped, reality crashing down. “You can’t do that!”
Julian stepped forward, his voice low and menacing. “You will never see her again if you keep this up.”
I stumbled backward, my heart sinking in horror. “You’re lying. You can’t just take her from me!”
“Watch me,” he spat, his eyes cold as ice. The room spun, and I grasped for something, anything to hold on to.
