I Took Back My Power at His Company Party and Unveiled the Truth Behind the Lies

Section 5

My phone buzzed violently in my hand, the anonymous text lighting up the screen like a warning sign: ‘I know everything. If you proceed, you will lose more than just your career.’ My heart raced. I could feel the walls closing in as the words sank in, a chill creeping down my spine.

I turned away from the crowd, anxiety pinching my stomach. I had taken a monumental risk by stepping on that stage. The evidence I had gathered was supposed to protect me, not drag me into a darker abyss. What had I done?

“Julian!” I shouted above the chatter, spotting him across the room, his laughter ringing hollow. He turned, his brow furrowing as I rushed toward him. “We need to talk. It’s important.”

He raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing on his lips. “What now? More drama?”

“No, it’s serious!” I pressed, feeling the weight of everyone’s eyes on us. “I got a text. They know everything, Julian. About us, about Pendelton. They’re threatening me.”

His expression morphed from amusement to feigned concern. “Sweetheart, you’re overreacting. Who would bother? Just let it go.”

“Don’t play innocent with me!” My voice trembled. “Do you even care?”

“Of course I care, but you’re making a mountain out of a molehill. Focus on the party and let’s enjoy our night.” He turned away, dismissing me like I didn’t exist.

My fists clenched by my sides. I felt desperation clawing at me, and it only fueled my fury. I couldn’t let this go. Not now. I needed answers.

After the party, my mind raced as I replayed the events. I paced my apartment, muscles tense, the text still fresh in my mind. Who could be behind the threat? My mentor? No. He wouldn’t do that. Would he?

Images of our meetings flooded back: his praise, our late-night discussions about ethics and compliance, all of the times I leaned on him for guidance. I trusted him completely.

Just then, my phone buzzed again. It was a message from him. ‘We need to talk. Come to my office tomorrow.’ My stomach lurched. Perhaps he could explain the threat. Maybe he had insight into Pendelton’s illegal activities that could protect me.

But as I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, a growing dread settled in. What if he was part of this? What if he had orchestrated the threats to silence me? My mind raced through all the subtle hints I’d missed.

When I arrived at his office, the atmosphere felt heavy, almost suffocating. The blinds were drawn, the air stale. He stood with his back to me, staring at the city skyline.

“You wanted to see me?” I forced the words out, my throat dry.

He turned slowly, and the smile on his face felt wrong, like a mask slipping. “I thought you might want to talk about your little escapade.”

“You know about the threats?” I asked, my voice wavering. “Do you know who it is?”

His lips curled into a smirk, and suddenly the room felt like a prison cell. “I might, but should I?”

“What do you mean?” Panic rose in my chest, and I took a step back. “You’re not suggesting—”

“Your investigation has drawn attention, dear. Too much attention.” His demeanor shifted, the warmth in his eyes replaced by something cold and calculating. “And that could jeopardize everything we’ve built.”

“What are you saying?” The words slipped from my lips in a whisper, horror dawning on me.

He leaned closer, his voice a chilling whisper. “I’m saying you should reconsider your path. You’re in over your head, and I have interests to protect at Pendelton.”

My heart dropped as realization hit me like a freight train. My mentor, the very person I had confided in, was orchestrating the threats against me. He was the one trying to bury the truth, ensuring I’d remain silent.

“You… you set this up,” I stammered, backing away. “You’re complicit in all of this!”

His smile widened, the façade fully shattered. “It’s just business, sweetheart. Don’t take it personally.”

As the weight of betrayal crashed down on me, I felt the ground shift beneath my feet. I had thought my battles were personal, but now, everything I believed was tied in knots of deception.
