After the Confrontation
In the rear corner of the ballroom, I found a reprieve from the flashing cameras and probing eyes. Gabriel’s presence felt grounding, a sanctuary against the storm brewing in Julian’s gaze.
“You okay?” he asked, his voice low and soothing.
I met his eyes, a swirl of uncertainty mirrored in my own. “What if I can’t do this? What if I can’t be a single mother?”
Gabriel stepped closer, the warmth radiating from him calming my racing heart. “You’re not alone, Khloe. I’m here. We’ll get through this together.”
“But they’re going to judge me, Gabriel. They’ll say I’m just some desperate woman seeking attention.”
“Let them talk. What matters is that you’re about to bring a life into this world — that’s everything.”
I struggled against the creeping doubt. In the distance, I caught a glimpse of Julian watching us, his expression a dark thundercloud, plotting something sinister. Dalia shifted beside him, visibly anxious, glancing our way every few moments.
“It’s like they’re waiting for the perfect moment to strike,” I muttered, my heart tightening.
“Let them. You’re stronger than you think,” he replied, but his eyes told a different story — one of concern.
Facing Julian and Dalia Again
As I prepared to face Julian again, I steeled myself. “We need to go,” I whispered to Gabriel, but he shook his head gently.
“We stand together,” he said, taking my hand. We stepped forward as Julian and Dalia approached, the atmosphere heavy with unspoken tension.
“Khloe,” Julian said, forcing a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “How lovely to see you again.”
“Seriously?” I shot back. “You don’t mean that.”
Dalia attempted a smile, but it faltered under the weight of the situation. “I hope this isn’t too uncomfortable for you,” she said, her voice shaky.
“I’m just here to support my friend,” Gabriel interjected, his presence a tangible shield.
“This is ruining my happiness, Khloe,” Julian said, his voice laced with a feigned sincerity. “You need to understand that.”
I felt fire ignite within me. “I’ve moved on, Julian. You should, too.”
For a moment, it felt like we were reaching an uncomfortable truce, but then Dalia leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “I know about your past with Julian,” she said, a sly smile creeping on her face. “And I will expose it if you don’t step back.”
My breath hitched in my throat, dread pooling in my stomach. “You wouldn’t dare.”
“Try me,” Dalia said, her confidence brimming, but just then, Gabriel’s face paled as he pulled out his phone. My heart raced. What news could be so shocking?
“Khloe, it’s Dalia,” he said, looking at the screen, voice trembling. “She’s planning to go public with a scandal involving you.”
Everything I had fought for felt precarious, as if the solid ground beneath me was crumbling into chaos.
