Section 3
“Call an ambulance!” I shouted, my voice cutting through the shock that enveloped the kitchen. Emily lay on the floor, her face pale as she clutched her injured arm. Panic surged through me, cold and urgent.
Celeste stood frozen, her wineglass trembling in her hand. “What happened?” she finally asked, her voice thin and wavering.
“She collapsed!” I snapped, kneeling beside my daughter, cradling her head. “Emily, can you hear me?”
“Mom, I…” Emily’s voice was barely a whisper, filled with pain and fear. I couldn’t let her go. I pressed my palm to her forehead, feeling the clamminess of her skin.
“Just breathe, sweetheart. Help is on the way,” I murmured, fighting my own rising dread.
Adrian, hovering near the doorway, glanced at me, irritation etched across his face. “This is ridiculous. It’s just a scratch,” he said, his tone dismissive. “She’ll be fine.”
“A scratch?” I shot back, my anger bubbling to the surface. “You have no idea what she’s going through. You can’t just ignore this!”
His smile faded, replaced by a flash of defensiveness. “It’s not like she’s dying, is she?”
“No, but you seem more worried about your image than her well-being,” I retorted, my voice low and steady.
The room fell silent, the weight of unspoken truths heavy in the air. I locked eyes with Adrian, and in that moment, I saw the cracks in his façade. It was as if the charming husband was peeling away, revealing something darker beneath.
The sirens wailed in the distance. I kept my focus on Emily, who had started to tremble. “Stay with me, sweetheart,” I whispered. “You’re not alone.”
As the paramedics rushed in, I felt a swell of determination. This was only the beginning. I wouldn’t let Adrian keep her in this cycle of fear.
Section 4
The hospital room smelled sterile, the fluorescent lights harsh against the pale walls. I sat beside Emily, holding her hand tightly. She was silent, her eyes darting around, and I could sense the fear radiating from her.
“Mom, I… I don’t know how it got this bad,” she finally said, her voice trembling.
“What do you mean?” I asked, gently squeezing her hand.
“Adrian… he’s not what he seems. It started slowly, but now it feels like I can’t breathe. He’s always there, watching, controlling,” she confessed, her voice wavering.
“Controlling? How?”
“He isolates me. Friends, family… I barely get to see them. I’m scared, Mom. It’s like I’m losing myself.” Tears spilled down her cheeks, and I felt my heart shatter for her.
“You’re not losing yourself, Emily. We can get through this,” I assured her, but doubt crept into my mind.
Every time she spoke, I saw the girl I once knew struggling within the confines of her marriage. I remembered our laughter, the joy she used to exude, now replaced by this haunting fear.
Just then, the door swung open with an unsettling force. Adrian stepped in, anger radiating from him like heat. “I need to speak with Emily alone,” he demanded, his tone leaving no room for argument.
“No. She’s not going anywhere with you,” I replied, standing my ground. The air thickened with tension, and I could feel Emily shrink away behind me.
“This is ridiculous. You think you’re protecting her?” Adrian shot back, his voice raising. “You have no idea what’s best for her!”
“And you think scaring her into submission is love?” I spat, my fury igniting.
I could see Emily quivering, caught between two storms. My resolve hardened. I wouldn’t let him manipulate her any longer, no matter what it took. Our lives were on the line.
With a sudden movement, Adrian lunged at me in a fit of rage, and I felt the air shift, knowing that this confrontation could change everything.
