Section 5
Mariana leaned against the cold wall of the dimly lit hallway, her heart racing. Mr. Alcázar had left a trail of whispers behind him—murmurs of secret help he offered to women who found themselves in dire straits like her. She couldn’t shake the feeling that this help came with sinister strings attached.
“He’s forwarding money to single mothers,” Luisa had said, glancing over her shoulder as if he might hear. “But no one knows where it comes from.” The other waitresses nodded, their faces creased with concern.
“Mariana, be careful. He’s a dangerous man,” whispered Carla, her eyes wide with fear.
But the thought of keeping Renata safe and well-fed overshadowed all her doubts. She pressed her phone against her ear, scrolling through texts from the other mothers at the restaurant, expressing relief that someone was looking out for them. Each message ignited a flicker of hope, but also a fleeting suspicion. What was the cost of this supposed charity?
“I need to know more,” she muttered to herself, shoving her phone in her pocket. Mariana decided to dig deeper. She had to understand what she was getting into if she accepted Mr. Alcázar’s help.
That evening, as the restaurant buzzed around her, she overheard a heated conversation between two of the kitchen staff. “He’s involved with El Suceso,” one hissed. “You know what that means.”
Mariana’s stomach dropped. El Suceso was a name whispered in the shadows, associated with crime and corruption. It was a web she had never wanted to touch. Could it be true? Was Mr. Alcázar not just a businessman but a puppet master in a criminal scheme?

The weight of her discoveries pressed heavily on Mariana’s chest. Decisions swirled in her mind as she confronted Mr. Alcázar in his office the next afternoon. She steeled herself, prepared to question him about his ties to El Suceso.
“You have something on your mind, Mariana?” he asked, his gaze piercing yet oddly familiar. It made her skin prickle. She hesitated, her hands trembling slightly.
“People are talking…” she started, but her voice faltered.
“Let them talk,” he said dismissively, leaning back in his chair. “What matters is survival. Do you want better for your daughter or not?”
Mariana opened her mouth to respond but was drowned out by a sudden barrage of memories—her childhood, her mother’s tears, the day he disappeared from their lives. Her heart raced. Did he really think she would turn a blind eye to the whispers? There had to be more beneath the surface.
“You can trust me,” he urged, leaning forward. “I help those who need it; you benefit from it. It’s a simple exchange.”
“But at what cost?” she blurted out, her voice trembling with emotion.
His expression darkened momentarily, and in that fleeting moment, she saw something. Something deeper than just a businessman. “Mariana,” he said softly, “you don’t understand. I’ve done things to ensure my family is safe.”
“My family?” she echoed, a chill crawling up her spine.
In an instant, everything fell into place—a twisted puzzle slowly revealing itself. Her breath caught in her throat. “No. It can’t be,” she whispered.
But as his eyes held hers, recognition flickered. The same shade of dark brown, the same stubborn set of the jaw. “I’m your father, Mariana,” he declared, the words heavy with implications.
Stunned, she took a step back, the world tilting. “You left us! You abandoned me!” The accusation tore through her as she staggered, confusion and rage battling inside her.
“I did what I thought was best at the time,” he defended, but his voice sounded hollow.
Every hope she had clung to dissolved like mist in the sun. The man who held her destiny seemed to be the very shadow of her past. Each memory of her mother’s despair folded back into her mind like a dark shroud.
“Help from you means shackles for my daughter,” she whispered painfully, realization surging like ice through her veins. Could she trust him? No, accepting his help would mean stepping back into a world she had tried desperately to escape.
