Revelations Unraveled
The weeks passed slowly, whispers of the note echoing in my mind. I avoided confronting Glenn, not wanting to ruin the fragile happiness we had built since his proposal. But every time I heard his laughter, that unsettling thought crept back: what if he was deceiving me?
Then one evening, after a long day at work, I returned home to find Glenn sitting at the table, paper strewn before him. Anxiety twisted in my stomach. He looked up, his eyes wide as if he’d seen a ghost.
“Hey,” he said, his voice shaky. “We need to talk.”
I felt my heart sink. “What about?”
“About the house,” he said, his fingers running through his hair.
Every instinct told me to run, to hide from the conversation I knew was coming. “I thought you were okay with it,” I replied, crossing my arms defensively.
“I am, but…” He hesitated, searching for the right words. “I think we need to consider what it means for us.”
“It’s my grandfather’s legacy,” I said, standing my ground. “I won’t let you take that from me.”
“I’m not trying to! But what if—”
Suddenly, I didn’t want to hear any excuses. “What if what?” I pressed, my anger rising. “Are you saying you want me to sell it?”
“No! I just… I just want to protect you,” he mumbled, but his eyes were darting away.
“Protect me from what? You’re acting like you know something I don’t.”
The tension thickened, and in that moment, the truth hung between us like a storm cloud. Then, just as I was about to demand more, my phone buzzed on the table. I grabbed it, expecting a text from a friend—
But it was a message from an unknown number. I opened it and my heart dropped.
“You don’t know the truth about Glenn. Meet me at the lake house. I have something you need to see.”
Glenn’s eyes widened with alarm as I read the message aloud. “Who is this?”
“I…I don’t know,” I stuttered, my mind racing. “But I need to go.”
“No, wait. Don’t—”
But I was already out the door.
Chasing Shadows
The drive to the lake house was frantic, my mind swirling with doubts and fears. What was I walking into? The sun had begun to dip below the horizon, dimming the scenery and casting long shadows. The once comforting road now felt like a deserted path leading into uncertainty.
As I parked and approached the house, I felt a knot tighten in my stomach. I could hear the familiar creaking of the boards beneath my feet, but it felt ominous. I hesitated, my breathing heavy as I stepped inside.
The living room was still, almost too quiet, as if the walls were holding their breath. I moved toward the fireplace, remembering the envelope I had found weeks ago. I had to find out the truth.
“Is anyone here?” I called out, my voice shaky. No response.
I searched the rooms, glancing into the cozy nooks filled with old memories, but the silence was stifling. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a flicker of light coming from the back porch.
My heart raced as I approached. There stood a figure, partially obscured by the fading light. It was a woman. I squinted, trying to make out her face.
“Who are you?” I demanded, feeling a mix of fear and bravado.
“You need to listen to me,” she said urgently, stepping further into the light. “I’m here to warn you about Glenn.”
“Why should I trust you?” I challenged, crossing my arms.
She shook her head, her eyes wide. “Because I was once your grandfather’s assistant. He told me things—things about Glenn.”
Every nerve in my body screamed to run, but I couldn’t. I needed answers. “What things?”
She hesitated, glancing over her shoulder as if she were afraid someone would overhear. “Glenn isn’t who you think he is. Your grandfather was worried about him. He said Glenn wanted something from you.”
The air crackled with tension as I processed her words. What was going on? “What do you mean?” I asked.
“Your grandfather didn’t leave you just the house. There’s more. Money, investments—hidden treasures that Glenn wants to control.”
“What are you saying?” I whispered, fear clawing at my throat. “You think he’s deceiving me?”
The woman nodded gravely. “He was watching you. Everything about you. You need to be careful.”
Just then, the sound of footsteps approached. I turned to see Glenn stepping onto the porch, his eyes alert. “What’s going on?” he demanded, clearly agitated.
“I’m leaving,” I said, my pulse quickening. “You don’t get to control this anymore.”
