Confronting the Truth
I took a deep breath as I stepped back into the party, the lively music and laughter feeling like a distant echo. My heart raced, fueled by a mix of determination and dread. I had to confront him about Funmi. There was no way I could let this slide any longer.
A brief glance around the room found him across the way, animated and relaxed. He was surrounded by guests, but my gaze honed in on him and Funmi. They were leaning closer, sharing a laugh that was all too familiar, sparking a fire in my chest. I could feel my stomach twisting. Just as I turned to walk toward him, I caught a snippet of conversation.
“I really wish we could relive those best moments before we moved in together,” he said, laughter dancing in his voice.
Those words ignited something primal and raw within me. I felt the heat of betrayal ignite in my veins. I wanted to shriek, to shatter the façade of this perfect party, but instead, I marched forward, my heart thundering in my ears.
“What do you really want, Michael?” I demanded, breaking through the laughter. The chatter subsided around us, and I felt dozens of eyes on me. “Is it her? Are you still stuck in the past?”
His expression shifted from surprise to defensiveness. “What are you talking about? We’re just reminiscing!”
“Just reminiscing?” I spat back. “While I stand here feeling like a stranger in my own home? You’re inviting her into our lives as if it means nothing to you!”
Crossing the Line
His face fell, and I could see the panic in his eyes, the realization of my unyielding stance. “Wait—let’s talk about this,” he urged, stepping closer, desperation edging his voice. “You have to understand—”
“Understand what?” I snapped, my voice rising. “That you’d rather be with her? That all this time, I was just a placeholder?”
“You’re wrong—I love you! I chose you!”
“Then why do you keep looking back?” I challenged, my breath hitching as the tears threatened to spill. “It feels like I’m fighting for your attention while you’re lost in your nostalgia with her.”
Just as I thought I caught a glimpse of his comprehension, the front door swung open, and in strolled Funmi. Time slowed. His face lit up, a familiarity that twisted the knife deeper in my gut.
“Can we talk?” she asked him, her voice honeyed with charm. I wanted to scream, to run, but I was frozen in place as he turned to her, a longing in his eyes that made my heart plummet.
I felt invisible, like I had slipped through the cracks of the world while they existed in their own bubble. “I’ll be right back,” he told me, following her. The betrayal sliced deeper, and I could barely breathe.
Then, she turned to me, a glint of something unreadable in her eyes. “Can we speak alone?” she asked, a tone of false warmth wrapping around her words.
What could she possibly want? The moment I stepped outside, she reached into her bag and pulled out a photo, handing it to me without hesitation.
“Here,” she said, her voice dripping with feigned sincerity. “I thought you should see this.”
As my hands trembled, I looked down at the photo in horror. It shattered my world further.
