Reunion and Revelation
The phone rang, pulling me from the depths of my chaotic thoughts. I recognized the number—Javier. My heart raced, a mixture of anger and anticipation flooding my chest as I answered. “María?” His voice trembled slightly. “It’s me.”
“What do you want?” I snapped, my pulse hammering in my ears.
“I’ve been watching your family from afar. I’m… I’m sorry for what I did.” His remorse melted into a soft plea that I had longed to hear. But I felt only resentment. “You abandoned us, Javier!”
“I know, I know! Please, just hear me out. The kids—do they ever talk about me? Do they have questions?”
His words hung in the air like a heavy fog. Of course they had questions; they often wondered why their father never came home. I swallowed hard, clenching the phone tightly. “They deserve to know the truth,” I stated, my voice faltering.
“Then let’s meet. I want to explain, to make things right.”
“Make things right?” I scoffed, disbelief flooding my thoughts. Yet, as I stared at the chaos of toys and drawings scattered across my living room, I knew I had to confront him. For my children.
“Please, María. One meeting. I owe them that.”
After a long silence, I relented. “Fine. Tomorrow. But I won’t promise anything.”
Unraveling the Truth
When the sun began to rise the next day, I felt the weight of the moment pressing down on me like a boulder. Javier arrived early, his eyes darting nervously as he stepped into my home. There was a palpable tension in the air as we faced each other. “Thank you for meeting me,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
I didn’t respond, waiting for him to speak. He shifted uncomfortably. “I wanted to show you something.”
He pulled out a small envelope, his hands shaking. “This DNA test… it’s proof.”
My breath caught in my throat. “What proof?” I demanded, a knot forming in my stomach. He opened the envelope and slid the paper toward me. “I’m not their biological father.”
“I can’t believe this,” I murmured, feeling my heart shatter.
“I’ve been trying to understand it all, María. There’s more to the story.” His defensiveness grew as I clenched the document in my trembling hands. “You think this means I’m lying? Show me the results!”
I was desperate for answers, crushed by the weight of his words. I scanned the page, searching for something that would explain the inconceivable. “How can you be sure? You left me without a word!”
Javier leaned closer, lowering his voice. “I had an affair. I didn’t want it to define me, didn’t want it to affect our family.”
I recoiled at his confession. “Another child? What does that have to do with…?”
“They might have answers. They may hold the key to understanding everything.” His eyes burned with intensity, and as the silence enveloped us, dread tightened around my heart.
Before I could respond, my phone buzzed on the table. I glanced at the screen—an unknown number. “It’s the hospital,” I said, my voice instinctively rising in alarm.
I hurried to answer, anticipation mixing with fear. “Hello?”
“María Fernández? This is Dr. Martínez from Seville General. We need to talk about a potential match related to the babies. It’s urgent.”
My pulse quickened, instinctually recognizing that this was the moment I had been waiting for all those years. “A match?” I breathed, barely able to comprehend the implication.
“Yes, but it involves your family and—”
The line went dead, the sudden silence feeling like a harbinger of chaos.
Javier’s face twisted with confusion. “What does that mean?”
“I don’t know! I just—” I broke off, my heart pounding. I couldn’t shake the feeling that everything was about to change.
Then, Dr. Martínez spoke again, interrupting my thoughts. “We have some information that relates back to your children and… the affair. You need to come to the hospital immediately.”
I nodded numbly, adrenaline coursing through my veins. Just as I hung up, the counselor handed me a file. It felt heavy with secrets, clues leading back to Javier’s past and the affair he had mentioned. I inhaled sharply, realizing the dark secret he had kept hidden all along.
