Confronting Kyle
The air in the lawyer’s office was heavy with disappointment as I turned to Kyle, my stomach churning. “How could you?” I demanded, my voice nearly cracking. “You sided with her?”
He shifted uncomfortably in his chair, glancing at Tabitha before looking back at me. “I had to, Ella. You don’t understand what I’ve been going through,” he replied, his eyes darting to the floor.
“What you’ve been going through? You think I don’t know? I lost our father, and now you’re choosing this… this woman over your own sister!” My heart raced, the words spilling out like poison.
“It was never just about her!” he shot back, his voice rising. “I’m drowning in debt. Calvin offered me a lifeline. I thought…”
“Thought what? That betraying your own blood was worth it?” I could feel the heat of betrayal flooding my cheeks.
His shoulders slumped, the fight leaving him. “I didn’t think you’d care. You’ve been so wrapped up in Dad.”
“So rather than stand up for me, you chose the easy way out?” I took a step back, the weight of his decision crashing down on me. “You were supposed to be on my side.”
“I am! I just… I felt trapped,” he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. “Calvin and Tabitha promised they would help me.”
“Help you?” I shook my head in disbelief. “You’ve sold out our family for a paycheck?”
He flinched, and I knew I had struck a nerve. “I did what I had to do, Ella. I thought it would be enough.”
I stared at him, the brother I once trusted now feeling like a stranger. “You thought wrong.”

My anger simmered as I walked back home, each step heavier than the last. Kyle’s words echoed in my mind, entwined with the bitter taste of betrayal. The familiar sights of my father’s neighborhood felt alien, each inch of grass a reminder of the crumbling trust.
Once inside, the house felt even emptier, the silence amplifying my thoughts. I needed answers. I needed to understand what had happened to the family I thought I knew.
I rummaged through my father’s belongings, each piece a connection to him and the life he had built. The old photo albums, dusty trinkets from his travels—every item felt like a piece of a puzzle that had shifted out of place.
Then, among a stack of papers in his desk, I found it—a sealed letter addressed to me. My heart raced, the familiar handwriting igniting a flicker of hope. I tore it open, scanning the words hurriedly.
“My dearest Ella, if you are reading this, it means I am no longer with you. There are things about our family that you need to know…”
My pulse quickened as I realized this letter held the potential to change everything. What secrets had he kept from me? Just as I was about to delve deeper into the revelation, the doorbell rang, shattering my focus.
With a deep breath, I opened the door, and there he stood—Calvin, smirking like he owned the world. My stomach twisted, anger bubbling beneath the surface.
“Ella,” he said, his tone dripping with mockery. “You have no idea what your father was planning for you, and it might just ruin everything you’ve ever known.”
