Chapter 1
As I drove away from the laughter, my heart raced. The headlights of the Bentley reflected on the smooth asphalt, but the road ahead felt darker than ever. Each mile marker was a reminder of the years spent trying to earn my father’s respect, only to be met with ridicule.
I could still hear his voice, the smirk evident even through the memories. “Looks at spreadsheets from her apartment.” The laughter echoed in my mind, a cruel melody I had grown accustomed to. But tonight, something inside me shifted.
My fingers gripped the steering wheel tightly. I had sacrificed so much to keep Hale Development afloat, all while being dismissed as the family disappointment. Long nights spent poring over balance sheets and profit margins while my siblings gleefully celebrated their achievements. I thought of the time I had given up my dreams to help Dad navigate a crisis, only to be ignored when it mattered most.
“No more,” I whispered to myself, the words barely escaping my lips. No more would I allow his laughter to define me. I glanced at the rearview mirror, seeing the house recede into the distance like a ghost. “I won’t be invisible anymore.”
With renewed determination, I pressed down harder on the accelerator, the engine’s growl matching the fire igniting within me. I was going to reclaim my identity, my power. I was done being a silent participant in my own life.
Chapter 2
Back at the house, the laughter had faded, replaced by an electric tension in the air. Dad’s face twisted in panic as he paced the living room, his phone pressed against his ear. “Why aren’t they answering? This can’t be happening!” He slammed the receiver down, sending vibrations through the furniture.
Grant and Elise exchanged worried glances. “Do you think she really did it?” Grant asked, his voice barely above a whisper. “She wouldn’t go this far, would she?”
Elise shrugged, biting her lip as she tried to assess the unfolding chaos. “We don’t know what she’s capable of anymore. She’s always been the one behind the scenes.”
Dad’s hands gripped the back of the couch, his knuckles white. “Get me someone from Northbridge Capital, now! This is a disaster!” His voice was a mixture of anger and fear, something I had rarely seen from him.
The room felt thick with uncertainty. I could almost hear the gears turning in Grant’s mind. Would Dad finally see what he had overlooked all these years? But as Dad’s frustration mounted, all I felt was a sense of dread for my siblings. They were caught in a web spun from years of my father’s arrogance and my own silence.
Suddenly, Dad let out a string of expletives, his fury directed toward the empty space in front of him. “How could she betray me like this? I made her! It’s my company!”
Before Grant or Elise could respond, the phone rang. Dad’s gaze snapped towards it, his heart racing as he picked up the receiver again. “Hello? Yes, this is Robert Hale.” His voice softened momentarily, a stark contrast to the storm brewing within him.
But just then, Elise’s phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, her eyes widening. “It’s Northbridge Capital,” she murmured, the color draining from her face.
“What?” Dad barked, turning his attention to her. “What do they want?”
“I don’t know yet,” she stammered, her hands shaking as she answered. “Hello? Yes, this is Elise Hale.”
Dad’s impatience simmered around us, a powder keg about to explode. Just as he was about to lash out at me again, Elise stuttered out a shocking revelation, her voice barely above a whisper. “They know about the fraud.”
