I Disguised My Coworker as My Boyfriend to Uncover What My Daughters Were Hiding from Me

“Tell me about your past,” Dr. Stevens said, her voice steady and inviting. I shifted in my seat, the leather creaking beneath me. The office was warm, filled with the scent of vanilla and something earthy, but I felt cold inside.

“It’s not that simple,” I replied, leaning forward. “I’ve never really thought about it. My life has been about my daughters.”

Dr. Stevens nodded, encouraging. “But maybe there are threads from your past that tie into your present. Let’s explore together.”

As I spoke, memories rushed back—my mother’s laugh, the way she claimed every man who entered our lives would leave. There was one man in particular, a shadowy figure who had vanished just when I thought I’d get to know him.

“He was… charming,” I murmured, pulling at the loose thread of my sweater. “Then, he just disappeared. Like he never existed.”

“Sometimes, children can sense things that parents don’t recognize. Do you think your daughters might be aware of something you haven’t acknowledged?”

I sat back, the therapist’s words hanging between us. A chilling thought gripped me. Was there a fear I had passed down to them? A fear of abandonment linked to my past relationships?

“What do I do if they know something I don’t?” I pressed, my heart racing. “What if…”

Dr. Stevens interjected gently, “Let’s keep exploring your history. There may be connections that illuminate their behavior.” I nodded, but unease settled in my stomach; the unknown felt like a dark cloud swirling above us.

Another Chance for Clarity

That evening, I invited Daniel over for a casual get-together. I thought it might ease my anxiety to have him around again, to observe my daughters in a different light. “It’s just dinner,” I told myself.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows in my living room, I set the table with care. The girls were excited, but there was a palpable tension in the air, a current I couldn’t ignore.

“Why do you keep looking at him?” I asked my youngest, who was stealing covert glances at Daniel.

“He’s just… funny,” she shrugged, but I couldn’t shake off the feeling that their interactions were charged with something deeper.

Throughout the meal, I caught my oldest’s eye more than once. She was unusually quiet, her attention fixed on Daniel like a hawk. I wondered if she had any idea what kind of storm brewed beneath the surface of our lives.

Halfway through dessert, I excused myself to grab drinks from the kitchen. As I rounded the corner, I overheard my oldest whispering, her voice low but urgent.

“Do you know what really happened?”

My heart raced. What was she talking about? I leaned closer, nerves tingling, hoping for answers.

Daniel’s response was barely audible, and I strained to catch his words. “I… I think I need to leave.”

I froze, my breath hitching. Was he scared? The pallor that had settled on his face was unmistakable. What did he know that I didn’t?
