Confrontation in the Garage
The moment I stepped into the garage, Ethan’s voice cut through the silence like a knife. “What are you doing here?” His tone was accusatory, eyes narrowing as if he’d caught me in a crime.
I didn’t back down. “I was just looking. Dad’s been acting strange.”
“You need to respect his privacy,” Ethan snapped, stepping closer. “This is none of your business.”
His aggression took me by surprise, sending a shiver down my spine. I crossed my arms, trying to steady myself. “What do you mean it’s none of my business? He’s my father too!”
“Enough!” he shouted, his voice echoing off the garage walls. “Get out of here. Now.”
I felt my heart race, confusion mingling with a rising sense of dread. This wasn’t just about a journal; it was about everything Ethan had hidden. There was something deeper going on with Dad, and I had to find out what.
As I stepped back, I caught a glimpse of my father’s tools, dusty and forgotten. What else was he hiding? My mind raced with questions, and Ethan’s stern demeanor made it clear that I wouldn’t get answers from him.
The Truth in the Shadows
Later that night, I approached my father in the dim light of the living room. He sat slouched in his chair, an air of defeat surrounding him. “Dad, can we talk?”
He looked up, hesitation painted across his face. “About what?”
“About the journal,” I said, taking a seat across from him. “I found it in the garage.”
His expression hardened, the flicker of something like fear in his eyes. “You shouldn’t have gone looking.”
“I want to understand,” I pressed. “What were you working on?”
With a heavy sigh, he finally opened up. “It’s a project I’ve been working on… inventions to help with aging.” His voice was barely above a whisper, filled with a mixture of pride and sadness.
I leaned in, intrigued. “Inventions? Like what?”
“Things to make daily life easier,” he replied, his eyes sparkling with a hint of excitement. “But… Ethan doesn’t believe in them.”
That stung. “He criticized your work?”
“He says I’m old-fashioned, that I should let go.”
I felt a flicker of hope. “Dad, I think it’s amazing. You should keep going!”
Just then, I glanced toward the door and caught sight of Ethan’s hulking figure, lurking in the shadows. His expression, twisted with rage, sent a chill through me. What was he really trying to protect?
As my father smiled faintly, discussing his dreams and ideas, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was a darkness looming over us. What was Ethan hiding beneath that veneer of control?
Then I finally understood. My father’s condition was more serious than I imagined, and in his fear of becoming a burden, he had allowed Ethan and Madison to control his life completely.
